General Training Reading: conditions, exceptions and evidence
Being allowed to join is different from having a place
- Mina is old enough for a workshop, but every seat is booked. Her eligibility, meaning she meets the entry conditions, does not create another seat.
- General Training Reading asks you to find usable information in everyday and workplace texts. Read the condition attached to a benefit before deciding who receives it. A waiting list is patient; it is not a spare room full of chairs.
Mina meets the entry conditions, but the workshop is full. What follows?
Entry eligibility is established; an available place is not. Neither meeting the conditions nor submitting a form creates a seat.
Put the person inside the notice's conditions
- This original fictional notice has three separate questions: Who may attend? Is there room? What confirms a booking? Read all three before choosing an answer.
- Highlight only, unless · sauf si, at least and · et provided that when they change a rule. Then identify the person or action to which the condition applies.
Brook Lane repair workshop
Residents aged 16 or over may attend. A non-resident may attend only with a resident host who also attends. The Wednesday workshop has twelve places. Bookings close 24 hours before it starts. A confirmation email reserves a place; sending the form alone does not. If the workshop is full, applicants may join the waiting list without paying. Staff offer a cancelled place to the next person on that list. Bring the item you want to repair. Electrical repairs are not offered at this workshop.
Under the Brook Lane notice, when may a non-resident attend?
The notice requires a resident host who also attends. A host’s name or a non-attending host does not meet that condition.
Brook Lane: “Sending the form alone reserves a place.” Choose the evidence label.
“Sending the form alone does not” reserve a place directly contradicts the statement, so FALSE is correct. TRUE contradicts the notice; NOT GIVEN ignores explicit evidence.
A missing rule is different from a rejected rule
- “Sending the form reserves a place.” → FALSE. The notice explicitly says it does not. “A 16-year-old resident meets the age condition.” → TRUE. “16 or over” includes 16; this does not guarantee a seat.
- “Every attendee receives a free drink.” → NOT GIVEN. Drinks are neither promised nor denied. Do not import your experience of other workshops. Match the statement's scope to this notice's evidence.
A positive entry rule does not settle every other requirement. Likewise, “join the waiting list without paying” does not say attendance itself is free. The phrase describes the waiting list, not the whole workshop.
Brook Lane: “Every attendee receives a free drink.” Choose the evidence label.
The notice contains no rule about drinks. NOT GIVEN is correct; the absence of a promise does not establish FALSE, and TRUE has no supporting statement.
Brook Lane: “A resident aged exactly 16 meets the stated age condition.” Choose the evidence label.
“Aged 16 or over” includes exactly 16. TRUE concerns the age condition only; it does not assert that space or confirmation exists. FALSE contradicts the threshold; NOT GIVEN ignores it.
Joining Brook Lane’s waiting list without paying proves the workshop itself is free.
No. The no-payment rule applies to joining the waiting list. The text does not state the workshop’s attendance price.
Follow the workplace policy's normal route and exception
- This fictional policy has a normal route and an exception. Identify who approves what, then check which route fits the employee's situation.
- “Before” and “after” can decide the answer as strongly as a job title. A receipt records a purchase; it does not prove that the required approval happened.
North Desk training policy
For an external training course, obtain written approval from your line manager before booking. Send the course outline and proposed fee with your request. Once approved, book through the staff portal. Keep the receipt for your expense claim. If a compulsory course is announced with less than two working days' notice and your manager is unavailable, contact the duty supervisor before booking. The supervisor may approve that urgent request. This exception does not apply to optional courses. A request awaiting a reply is not approval.
Under North Desk’s policy, an unanswered request counts as permission to book.
The policy explicitly says a request awaiting a reply is not approval. Sending the request and obtaining approval are separate actions.
An optional course is announced tomorrow and the manager is unavailable. Does North Desk’s urgent exception apply?
It applies to compulsory courses under the stated timing and availability conditions, and explicitly excludes optional courses.
Copy the requested fact rather than a nearby document
- Under ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE TEXT, “What must an employee keep for an expense claim?” takes receipt. “Course outline” belongs to the approval request and answers another question.
- For the exception, check all conditions together: compulsory course + less than two working days' notice + manager unavailable. One condition alone does not establish the exception. Do not silently replace working days with calendar days.
Use a compact evidence note: person or action → condition → result. Add the exception separately. For a short answer, copy the smallest phrase that still identifies the requested fact, and follow that question's exact word rule.
North Desk: What must an employee keep for an expense claim? ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE POLICY.
“Keep the receipt for your expense claim” supplies the exact requested document. The course outline belongs to an earlier approval request.
A compulsory course has one working day’s notice and the manager is unavailable. Who may approve the urgent request before booking?
All exception conditions are met. The policy names the duty supervisor as the person who may approve the urgent request before booking.
Transfer the method to a different notice
- This new fictional notice changes the conditions. Read it afresh rather than carrying the workshop's age or waiting-list rules into it.
- The two policy cases train close reading; they do not measure your IELTS band. Use the General Training practice sets for a longer timed attempt, then record whether errors came from evidence, scope, vocabulary or time in your learning diagnostic.
Cedar Hall evening talk
Entry is free, but everyone needs a ticket. Adults may book up to two tickets each. Children under 16 must attend with an adult and need their own ticket. The doors open at 6:30 pm; the talk starts at 7 pm. Uncollected tickets are released at 6:50 pm unless the holder has arranged late collection with the office. A late-collection arrangement does not change the talk's starting time.
At Cedar Hall, free entry removes the need for a ticket.
The notice says entry is free but everyone needs a ticket. Free entry and permission to enter are separate conditions.
An adult accompanies a child aged 15 to Cedar Hall. What else does the child need?
Children under 16 must attend with an adult and need their own ticket. Both conditions apply.
A Cedar Hall holder has arranged late collection. What changes?
The ticket-release exception applies; the notice expressly says it does not change the 7 pm start.
Cedar Hall: Complete “The talk starts at ___.” Use the time exactly as printed.
6:30 pm is the door-opening time; 6:50 pm is the ticket-release time. The talk starts at 7 pm.
Change your reading task as the text gets longer
- The General Training paper moves from everyday information to workplace texts and a longer general-interest text. In the longer text, also track paragraph purpose, explanations and contrasts; do not search only for isolated dates or repeated words.
- The full Reading paper allows 60 minutes for 40 questions, including answering time. A brief lesson check is preparation for that task, not a substitute for it. Choose the correct Reading version when reviewing a practice result.
Source checked on 2 October 2026: official IELTS General Training Reading format. All organisations and policies in this lesson are invented original teaching material.
What should you add when moving from a short notice to a longer general-interest text?
Paragraph purposes, explanations and contrasts matter alongside specific details. Neither repeated words nor an attractive date alone establishes the requested meaning.
