A decision before an answer
- A summary can use different wording while preserving a story. Adding a personal opinion changes the task.
- Your goal: Identify main events, causes and outcomes in a source.
Read the relationship
- Read for actor, goal, obstacle, actions and result. Keep essential causal links rather than decorative details.
- Retell from memory without adding opinions or changing causal links.
A faithful summary should:
Retain source meaning and important relationships.
Use the defining rule
- In the legacy HSK 6 task, source reading is time-limited and the source is removed before writing. The standard sample uses 10 minutes reading and 35 minutes writing, with a summary of about 400 characters.
- Distinguish legacy timed summary practice from new-version requirements.
If the source says the site lacked water, a claim that neighbours refused help is:
It introduces a cause absent from the source.
Check the conditions
- After source removal, reconstruct the main sequence from memory. Do not add your own judgement, new events or a different ending.
- Distinguish legacy timed summary practice from new-version requirements.
Original short source: a team planned a garden; their first site lacked water; they chose a second site near a tap; neighbours helped; plants survived the dry week. A faithful summary keeps the water problem and solution. “The first site failed because neighbours refused help” invents a cause.
A summary should preserve the source’s main ____ (use “meaning”).
Different wording must not change its meaning.
Apply the task format
- Use actual supervised source removal for a rehearsal. A permanently visible passage is a supported summary exercise, not a replica of that legacy test task.
- Distinguish legacy timed summary practice from new-version requirements.
These legacy timing and length claims apply to the archived legacy sample. New HSK 3.0 task claims require the relevant new sample review.
