A small useful request
- Outcome: ask for help, repetition or slower speech, then say thank you. Start with small signs.
- Short phrases can help. With a real partner, respond to their actual words; the printed situations here are rehearsal.
Help and please
- “Help, please.” — ask for help 请帮忙. “Water, please.” — ask for water 请给我水.
- Please can make a short request courteous, but tone and situation also matter. It is not a guarantee that every request is suitable.
Choose a request for help.

Help, please asks for help. Thank you responds to help; goodbye ends an exchange.
Again and slowly
- “Again, please.” — one more time 请再说一遍. “Slowly, please.” — less fast 请慢一点.
- Worked choice: too fast → “Slowly, please.” Need the words again → “Again, please.” You can ask for both if needed.
You want the words one more time. Choose.

You want slower speech. Choose.

Slowly, please asks the person to slow down. It is different from only asking to hear the same words again.
Thank you
- “Thank you.” thanks a person 谢谢. It does not itself ask for repetition.
- Worked repair: if you need help, “Goodbye.” ends the exchange. Start with “Help, please.” instead.
Match each phrase to its job.

Requesting and thanking have different jobs. Both can be useful in one exchange.
Choose for a new situation
- Read what you need, then choose a short phrase before opening feedback.
- Do not choose a phrase only because it contains please. Check whether it asks for the thing or change you need.
You need the same words again. Choose.

Again requests repetition. Help is a wider request; goodbye ends the exchange.
A partner has helped. Choose a short thank-you.

Thank you acknowledges the help. The other choices ask for a change in what happens next.
You want water. Choose.

Water, please names what you want. It is a short request, not a complete statement about every drink.
Thank you. et Again, please. make the same request.

Thank you thanks; again, please asks for repetition. Do not treat every polite phrase as interchangeable.
Partner: Room seven. You need the number again.
You did not understand the room number. Ask for it again.

Ask for repetition before pretending that the number was understood. The printed number is a cue for rehearsal, not an audio test.
Your partner is speaking too fast. Ask them to slow down.

Slowly names the change you need: a slower pace. Water names an object instead.
A request and a reply
- Choose the help/thank-you order. Then draft a water request and thank-you before opening its model.
- Other clear natural wording can work. Keep the request’s purpose.
New exchange. You need help; then someone helps. Choose the useful order.

Ask for help first; thank the person after the help. The phrase choice follows what you need, not a rule to say every polite word.
Write two short English lines: ask for water, then thank the person. Draft before showing the model.
Compare with the meaning and checklist. A model is one possibility; this self-review does not check every answer or award proficiency.
Say the two turns
- Ask for repetition aloud; pause for the partner, then thank them. Record before seeing guidance.
- Replay locally and try one repair if useful. No recorded pronunciation model or listening assessment is supplied.
Printed situation: you need the words one more time. Ask your partner in English, then thank them after they repeat. Record both short turns with a pause. Alone, imagine the partner’s reply.
Say the response aloud. With a partner, respond to what they actually say; alone this is rehearsal from a printed cue. Recording, replay and comparison are local self-review, not a pronunciation or listening score.
Review and choose your next step
- Tomorrow, try the help request before rereading the examples. With a partner, use a different simple need and respond to their actual reply.
- Next: printed letters and name cards. Review names or numbers. When ready for longer sentences, try A1 be. This starter path does not certify completion of a CEFR level.
Course note: these are original starter examples. Pre-A1 is an intended teaching target, not a validated placement result or complete level course. Council of Europe descriptor information checked 21 October 2026; it does not approve this local course. Independent language, answer, recording/accessibility and learner reviews remain pending.
Later, choose a short request for help.
