比较

比较 · bǐjiào
fairly; rather, when describing a degree
Study these uses in context
Your goal: Distinguish making a comparison from describing a moderate degree.
Before you start: Recognise 两 for two, 价格 for price and adjective phrases such as 安静.
compare things
比较 acts as a verb with 两家商店的价格 as its object. The speaker examines the prices together.
我想比较两家商店的价格。
Wǒ xiǎng bǐjiào liǎng jiā shāngdiàn de jiàgé.
I would like to compare the prices at two shops.
relatively or fairly
Before 安静, 比较 gives a relative degree of quietness. The sentence does not name a second room in an explicit comparison.
这个房间比较安静。
Zhège fángjiān bǐjiào ānjìng.
This room is fairly quiet.
Compare: When booking a room, first 比较两个房间 — compare two rooms. You may then say 这个房间比较安静 — this room is relatively quiet. The first 比较 takes things to compare; the second modifies an adjective. To state explicitly that this room is quieter than that room, use 这个房间比那个房间安静.
Try with a clue: 请比较这两张照片。照片 means photograph. Is the listener asked to examine two photographs or told that a photograph is fairly quiet? Identify the object.
Check your reasoning
The listener is asked to compare the two photographs. 这两张照片 is the object of the verb 比较.
Try a fresh context: 这道题比较难。题 means question and 难 means difficult. Does this sentence identify another question that is easier? What can you safely conclude?
Check your reasoning
It presents this question as fairly or relatively difficult. A comparison standard is implicit; no particular easier question is identified.
Use it in a new situation: A learner treats 这家店比较便宜 as proof that it is the cheapest shop in town. Explain the overclaim. Then ask someone to compare two shops' prices using 比较 as a verb.
Check your reasoning
比较便宜 means relatively cheap; it is not a superlative and does not rank every shop in town. A possible request is 请比较这两家店的价格 — please compare these two shops' prices.
Recall later: Tomorrow, use 比较 once with an object and once before an adjective. Later, convert a relative description into a specific A 比 B comparison and explain the extra information.
These are selected reading and usage activities. Compare your reasoning before rating recall below; no automatic usage or pronunciation score is awarded.

About this word list
The index includes all 5,400 official HSK 3.0 entries across six levels. Different readings and official entries remain separate. Original teaching examples illustrate particular uses; additional dictionary senses are reference support. This does not establish complete syllabus teaching or exam readiness.
Use example pinyin with the audio. 一 and 不 can change tone in ordinary speech; revisit tone changes if these sound different. 儿 can join the preceding syllable, as in huìr.
