B2 speaking takes the floor and holds it with structure. B2
Arguing a case out loud runs four moves: state the claim, support it with a reason and a carried example, concede the fair point and reply, then restate the claim with its consequence.
Presenting a topic is a guided tour, and tours announce every turn, because the audience cannot rewind. First, turning to, that brings me to, to sum up. 做展示是带导览:观众不能倒带,所以每个转弯都要报站——first、turning to、to sum up。
Say the map out loud, and the floor stays yours.
The four moves, out loud, on the phones question. State: my view is that phones should be allowed, with rules. Support: the main reason is research speed, for instance, we checked three sources in five minutes on Tuesday. Concede and reply: of course, phones distract, even so, the distraction rules already exist for paper notes. Restate: so that is why I support them. One claim per turn, and keep your voice level steady through the concession, because the reply, not the concession, is the destination.
A presentation is a tour, and tours announce every turn. Open with the map: today I will cover three things, cost, time, and fairness. Signpost each stop: first, turning to time, that brings me to fairness. Inside a stop, point at the load: the key point here is. And close the tour by walking the map again: to sum up, cost showed this, time showed that, and fairness means the change. The rule of three keeps the tour walkable, and the slides stay as the map while the talking happens around them. 展示是导览:开场报地图(今天讲三点:成本、时间、公平);每一站报站名(first、turning to、that brings me to);站内指重点(the key point here is);收尾重走地图(to sum up…)。
B2 speaking uses the instrument, not just the words. Stress the load-bearing word: the main reason is cost, with the weight on main, points the ear straight at it. Pause before the key point, not after it: the silence before the climax is what builds it. And slow down for numbers and names, because the audience is spelling them in their heads as you say them.
Watch out for three traps. Do not read slides aloud: the slides are the map, and the tour is spoken around them. Do not end on a detail, because the last sentence is the one the room keeps: make it the summing-up. And stop hunting fillers one by one; replace them with silence, because a short pause reads as confidence while an um reads as noise.
Check yourself. Name the four moves of a spoken argument, in order. Give the signpost that moves the tour from stop B to stop C.
Where does the pause go, before or after the key point?
And at the end of the tour, what does the last sentence do?
If the tour and the moves run without notes, the floor is yours.
