假如 … ,就 … (if / supposing)
IntroducedTry when an opportunity arises
- A friend wants to join a workshop but does not yet have a place. supposing假如have有chance机会,then就go去try试试。 — if there is an opportunity, give it a try.
- The advice sets a possible condition. It does not announce that a place has already been offered or that trying guarantees success.
You advise a friend to try if an opportunity arises. What does 假如有机会,就去试试。 communicate?
The opportunity is a hypothetical condition for trying. 就 is common in the result clause, but not mandatory in every 假如 sentence. The condition is not a statement that the opportunity already exists.
Put the condition before the response
- supposing假如 + condition,…then就 + response links a supposed situation with a result, plan or suggestion.
- In the original example, have有chance机会 is the condition and go去try试试 is the suggested response. Read the response as advice, not as an action already completed.
supposing假如have有chance机会,then就go去try试试。
Use the lesson target 假如 in this example: If there's a chance, give it a try: ____ 有机会,就去试试。
假如 … ,就 … = if / supposing: 假如有机会,就去试试.
Update the actual condition
- supposing假如tomorrow明天have free time有空,we / us我们then就go去visit (a place)参观。 — if we are free tomorrow, we will go and visit — uses tomorrow’s availability.
- A later message says everyone is free today but busy tomorrow. Today’s free time does not establish the tomorrow condition.
假如 is closest to…
假如 ≈ 如果, a touch more formal / hypothetical.
The plan is 假如明天有空,我们就去参观。 A later message says free today, busy tomorrow. Is today’s availability evidence for the named condition?
Keep the time in the condition. Today’s availability does not establish tomorrow’s availability.
Do not require then就 everywhere
- supposing假如you你have free time有空,we / us我们together一起go去(suggestion)吧。 — if you have free time, let us go together — is an invitation without then就.
- then就 is a common partner, not a compulsory word in every conditional. The complete second clause still supplies a meaningful response.
Every sentence beginning 假如 must include 就 in the result clause.
就 is a common partner, not obligatory in every conditional: 假如你有空,我们一起去吧 is natural.
假如有机会,就去试试。 guarantees that trying will succeed.
The advice names a condition for trying; it does not guarantee the outcome of the attempt.
Separate if from even if
- supposing假如to rain下雨,I / me我then就not不go去。 changes the plan if it rains. even if (here)就是to rain下雨,I / me我also也go去。 keeps going despite possible rain.
- A plain if-condition does not report that rain is certain. It also does not list every possible reason a person might choose not to go.
Match the complete sentence to its relationship.
The if-condition, even-if concession and conditional invitation state different responses.
假如下雨,我就不去。 alone establishes that rain is the only possible reason for not going.
This statement gives one conditional response. It does not rule out every other possible reason for not going.
Read condition, response and evidence
- Identify the supposed case and the proposed result or action. Check that any later evidence concerns the same people, time and condition.
- Keep advice separate from guaranteed success. Do not require then就 everywhere or turn an if-condition into a weather report or a complete list of causes.

Recall the situation: Try when an opportunity arises. Decide what the speaker wanted to communicate. Close the examples. Say a Mandarin response, then write it in Chinese. Explain briefly in English what the lesson’s pattern adds. Compare with the model, then change one detail and try again.
This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.
