A2 reading meets you with three shapes: the email, the notice and the short story.
Each has a skeleton, and the skeleton tells you where to look first.
Read the skeleton fast and the flesh slowly: the subject line maps the email, the heading and date carry the notice, and in a story you track one person, one problem, one change.
The email has four parts. The subject line is the map: class trip on Saturday, new time, and you already know the message. The greeting names the reader. The body must reach its point by line two: the bus now leaves at eight. And the sign-off says who wrote it. Read the subject and the first body line, and eighty percent of emails are done. If there is a question, it usually waits at the end: please reply by Thursday, where by marks the last day, not the first.
A notice is a public email. The worked notice: LIBRARY CLOSED, in capitals, with the date, Friday the twentieth of May. What: closed all day for repairs. Where instead: the study room in Block B. How long: open again on Saturday. Five lines, four answers, and the capitals and the date are the two hands that point to them.
A2 stories are small: one person, one problem, one change.
Ana lost her bus card: the person and the problem. She walked home in the rain: the trouble grows. Her neighbour drove past and gave her a lift: the change.
Track the person with one finger, and slow down at the turning signals, but, so, because and then. Meet an unknown word?
手指盯着人,遇到 but、so、because、then 就减速。
Ask whether it is the person, the problem or the change; if it is none of them, it can wait for the dictionary.
Use the skeleton to guess an unknown word is job before its meaning. The museum is closed for renovation: closed for something means the something is the reason, and a fixing-word fits a reason for closing.
Guessing the job narrows the meaning to a small box, and then the dictionary comes and labels the box.
Watch out for three traps. Do not read every word at the same speed: the skeleton deserves speed, and the flesh deserves care. Dates run small to big or big to small: twenty May and May twentieth are the same day, so do not double-check yourself into doubt. And reply by Thursday means Thursday is the last day, not the day to begin.
Check yourself. Which line of an email holds eighty percent of the message? Name the notice two hands.
In the three-sentence story, what is the second sentence job?
And is reply by Thursday the last day or the first?
If the skeletons sort themselves, the reading is done.
