Parts three and four are the long texts. Part three: one text, five four-option questions on detailed meaning. Part four: a text with five sentences removed, eight candidates, three decoys — the famous jigsaw, and the one students fear most. The memory hook: part three asks what does it mean; part four asks where does it snap in. Meaning in one, cohesion in the other.
Part three asks about opinion, attitude and implication. What does the writer think is answered by the feeling words and the modals; what does she suggest lives in should, might, it's worth, if I were you. The traps are half-true: right fact, wrong judgement. The method is the A2 map with longer roads: question, locate the paragraph, read two lines around it, paraphrase it yourself, then match.
Pause and choose. Book early. It's worth is a suggestion marker, and the modal words carry the advice. The expensive and cancelled options invent facts the text never said, and never book is the advice read backwards.
The sentence jigsaw is held together by visible glue, checked on both sides of every gap. Pronouns: he, it, they, this need an owner before the gap; no owner, no place. Time and order words: then, after that, at first, finally. Linkers: but, however, so, and the two sides must contrast or agree as the linker demands. And repeated ideas: the gap's neighbours and the sentence must be about the same thing. Fill the easiest gap first; each placement shrinks the decoy list.
Pause and choose. The smell of fresh bread fills the street by seven: the time chain, six, seven, eight, and the bakery idea both hold. My grandfather loved fishing fits the grammar and betrays the logic; a decoy is a sentence that fits grammatically and belongs nowhere.
Implication questions: the answer is not written in the text; it is justified by it. The course was hard is written. I wouldn't say it was easy, but it was worth every evening implies a positive attitude with effort, and the but carries it. The text never says it directly, but says everything needed to conclude it. And remember for the jigsaw: grammar alone can't solve it; cohesion can.
Try it. The bakery opens at six, gap, and by eight the queue reaches the corner. The candidate: the smell of fresh bread fills the street by seven. The glue: the time chain, six, seven, eight, and the bakery topic on both sides. Fill the easiest gap first; a placed sentence is evidence for the others, and a guess beats a gap.
Pause for four checks. What does the writer suggest: hunt the modals. A candidate's he or this needs an owner before the gap. A decoy fits the grammar and betrays the logic. And the easiest gap first: the decoy list shrinks. Next topic: the clozes, lexical and open — the vocabulary and grammar engines at B1.
