运营管理

English

IB Diploma Programme Business Management HL, Unit 5 Operations management (first assessment 2024). This topic covers syllabus sections 5.1–5.9 in full: the role of operations and the transformation process, operations methods, lean production and quality management (HL only), location, break-even analysis, production planning (HL only), crisis management and contingency planning (HL only), research and development (HL only) and management information systems (HL only). The worked numbers extend the shared repair business, and they reconcile with Unit 3: price 25 per repair, variable cost 15 (cost of sales $360\,000$ over $24\,000$ repairs), fixed costs $12\,500$ a month.

Must-know for Unit 5:

Family Content
transformation inputs → process → outputs; efficiency vs effectiveness
productivity labour productivity $= 2\,000/80 = 25$ repairs per employee per month
methods job, batch, flow; mass customisation
lean/quality (HL) JIT, kaizen; quality control vs assurance; TQM
break-even contribution 10; BEQ $= 12\,500/10 = 1\,250$; MoS 750
HL planning capacity $2\,000/2\,500 = 80\%$; ROL $= 500 \times 2 = 1\,000$; crisis vs contingency; R&D and IP; MIS

The transformation process and operations methods

English

Operations management 运营管理 (5.1) turns INPUTS (labour, parts, premises, information) through a PROCESS into OUTPUTS (goods and services), aiming at EFFICIENCY (output per unit of input — doing things right) and EFFECTIVENESS (meeting the objective — doing the right things). The key measure is productivity 生产率: output over input. LABOUR productivity $=$ repairs $/$ staff: $2\,000$ repairs a month with 80 employees is 25 repairs per employee; productivity rises by more output from the same staff (training, tools, layout) or the same output from fewer.

Operations methods (5.2) choose HOW to produce. JOB production makes one custom item at a time (a racing-bike build) — high value, high skill, high unit cost. BATCH makes groups of identical items then switches (e-bike service visits by district) — flexible between lines, but change costs and idle time between batches. FLOW (mass) production runs one standard product continuously (a puncture-repair line) — lowest unit cost, but inflexible and deskilling. Mass customisation 大规模定制 uses flexible technology to offer choice at near-flow cost — the subscription bike configured online, serviced on a flow line — the modern ideal and the classic evaluative contrast.

Lean production, quality (HL) and location

English

HL: LEAN production 精益生产 cuts every form of waste (overproduction, waiting, transport, inventory, motion, defects): JUST-IN-TIME holds almost no stock, ordering parts to arrive as needed (saving holding cost, exposing quality problems instantly, at the risk of one late delivery stopping the line); KAIZEN is continuous improvement by every employee in small steps; time-based management compresses every stage's duration. QUALITY is fitness for purpose: QUALITY CONTROL inspects and rejects at the end (finding faults); Quality assurance 质量保证 builds quality into every stage (preventing faults); TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT commits the whole organisation to continuous improvement with the customer defining quality — and quality circles, benchmarking and empowerment are its instruments. The evaluation: prevention costs less than correction.

Location (5.4) weighs QUANTITATIVE factors (site cost, labour cost, grants, transport costs — a weighted-score or break-even table can rank sites) against QUALITATIVE ones (image, labour skills, infrastructure, proximity to customers and suppliers, regulation, environmental limits). For a service like repairs, CUSTOMER PROXIMITY dominates; for parts storage, cost and access dominate — the fourth workshop sits by the station, the parts depot by the ring road.

盈亏平衡分析

English

Break-even analysis 盈亏平衡分析 finds the output where total revenue equals total cost. CONTRIBUTION per unit $=$ price $-$ variable cost $= 25 - 15 = 10$ — each repair contributes 10 toward the fixed costs of $12\,500$ a month. Break-even quantity $=$ fixed costs $/$ contribution $= 12\,500 / 10 = 1\,250$ repairs a month: below it the month loses money, above it every extra repair adds 10 of profit. The margin of safety 安全边际 is actual output minus break-even: $2\,000 - 1\,250 = 750$ repairs, or $37.5\%$ of sales — the fall the business can absorb before losses. TARGET output for a chosen profit $=$ (fixed costs $+$ target profit) $/$ contribution: a $15\,000$ monthly profit needs $(12\,500 + 15\,000)/10 = 2\,750$ repairs. The chart plots TR and TC against output, crossing at $1\,250$. LIMITATIONS: costs and price are assumed constant, output assumed sold, step-fixed costs ignored — it is a model, and a fragile one far from the current output.

Production planning, crisis, R&D and MIS (HL)

English

Production planning (5.6) manages CAPACITY and STOCK. Capacity utilisation 产能利用率 $=$ actual output over maximum capacity $\times 100$: $2\,000$ of a $2\,500$ capacity is 80% — the 85–90% band is healthy; below it fixed costs spread thinly and staff idle (under-utilisation), above it there is no slack for maintenance or surges, and quality and machine failure rise (over-utilisation). INVENTORY control: BUFFER STOCK absorbs demand shocks (200 parts), LEAD TIME is the order-to-delivery gap (2 weeks) and the REORDER LEVEL $=$ usage $\times$ lead time $= 500 \times 2 = 1\,000$ parts — order when stock falls to $1\,000$ and the buffer absorbs error. SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT coordinates suppliers, production and distribution; its weakness is the crisis section's subject.

Crisis management 危机管理 (5.7) reacts to an event that threatens the business (fire, supplier collapse, data breach): the process is respond, contain, recover, learn. A CONTINGENCY PLAN is written BEFORE the event — identified risks, pre-assigned roles, backup suppliers and sites, rehearsed. The difference is timing: contingency planning is the rehearsal, crisis management the performance.

Research and development (5.8) creates new products and processes; R&D spends now for revenue later, with TAX relief in many countries, and its outputs are protected as intellectual property 知识产权: patents (inventions, up to 20 years), copyright (expression, automatically), trademarks (brand signs) — and trade secrets, kept simply undisclosed.

Management information systems (5.9) turn DATA (raw, unprocessed) into INFORMATION (processed, meaningful, timely, accurate, relevant) for decisions: bookings, stock and productivity on one dashboard; big data extends the range but brings cost, privacy and interpretation limits — and an MIS is only as good as the decisions it informs.

Supported preparation: Operations and break-even

Scope and prerequisites

IB business management first assessment 2024. Business research project investigates one real organization through a conceptual lens. The toolkit and change, creativity, ethics and sustainability connect units; HL-only topics remain marked.

Mapped preparation outcomes: ib_business_management_hl.5.1, ib_business_management_hl.5.2. Read the matching native lesson first. Actual approved choices, evidence and final learner work remain separate.

Source vocabulary

contribution 边际贡献; margin of safety 安全边际.

Explanation and worked method

Job production suits customized work; batch production groups similar jobs; flow production suits repeated standardized output. Location trades access, labour, transport and costs. Break-even uses constant price and variable cost per unit, fixed costs and output sold.

Existing original lesson representation: Break-even under constant unit price and cost. It illustrates its source lesson, not invented research results.

Task: fixed cost 4,800 units, price 40 units per item, variable cost 24 units per item, expected sales 360 items. Calculate break-even and margin of safety, then evaluate capacity of 280.

Contribution per item=price−variable cost=40−24=16 units/item. Break-even quantity=fixed cost/contribution=4,800/(16 units/item)=300 items. Margin of safety=expected sales−break-even=360−300=60 items. Capacity 280 is below break-even, so the assumed 360 sales are infeasible without changing capacity or costs. HL may examine quality, contingency and information systems; claims require operational evidence.

Independent transfer

Price falls from 40 to 36 while variable cost stays 24 and fixed cost stays 4,800. Recalculate break-even.

Attempt independently before reading the model.

Checked original model

Contribution per item=price−variable cost=36−24=12 currency units/item. Break-even quantity=fixed cost/contribution=4,800/12=400 items. At expected sales of 360, margin of safety=360−400=−40 items; the model predicts a shortfall. Capacity and demand must be checked again.

These are authored formative expectations, not official IB descriptors. Accept other justified arguments with evidence and material limits.
