This is a page from an artist's notebook. John Singer Sargent drew on it in eighteen seventy, when he was still a teenager. Look at what is on it. Half a mountain, in faint pencil. Place names. An address in Florence. A date. It is not a finished drawing. It is a mind at work, left on paper.
Now think about your own portfolio.
Two students each hand in fifteen drawings, and both draw well.
The first folder is fifteen good drawings of fifteen different things.
Nothing joins them.
The second is fifteen drawings that all chase one question, and you watch it get sharper.
<slow>The second student scores far higher.</slow> Not more skill — better investigation.
That is what Topic five is about. Six things build an investigation. Inquiry, and asking questions. Sources of ideas. Materials, processes and ideas. Context. Evaluating drawings. And documentation. We will build all six, and work one real example right through.
Inquiry means asking questions on purpose, and letting the answers decide what you make next.
It is the engine of Big Idea One.
A workable inquiry is open, personal and visual.
Open, so it has more than one answer. Personal, so only you would ask it. Visual, so you answer it by drawing, not by writing.
Your Sustained Investigation is scored on how the work develops that one question.
An investigation is a loop, not a straight line.
Question: ask something you can draw.
Explore: research, look, collect.
Make: draw, test, take risks.
Reflect: critique, write, choose.
Then it starts again — each pass deepens the investigation.
Every drawing answers a little, and asks a little more.
Let's work a real one.
A student writes: I will draw hands.
That is a subject, not a question.
It asks nothing, so nothing can develop.
Test any question three ways. Is it open?
Is it personal?
Can you answer it by drawing?
Now rewrite it. How can line weight express my grandmother's hands aging?
Same hands — but now there is something to find out.
Here is the test that shows a question is big enough.
List ten works it could produce.
Hands at rest. Clenched.
Holding a cup. In low light.
One finger, close up.
With cloth.
From memory. In ink.
On torn paper. Life-size.
Ten works, all different, and every one still answering the same question.
If you run out before five, the question is too narrow. Open it up.
Where does a question like that come from?
From your own experiences.
Six sources feed a drawing practice: observation — draw from life. Memory — places, people, childhood. Research — anatomy, history, science.
Culture — calligraphy, textiles, film. Other artists.
Other subjects. One journal collects it all. Ordinary things carry authority: the kitchen table you know beats a castle you do not.
Every drawing is built from three parts, and these are the College Board's own names.
Materials — what it is made of.
Processes — how it is made.
Ideas — what it is about.
A material suggests a process; a process changes the idea.
Change one at a time, so you can see what it did.
Use those exact words when you write.
Use CED vocabulary in written evidence — materials, processes, ideas, experimentation, revision — they connect your claim to the rubric.
Drawings mean more when you know where they came from.
That is context: when, where, why, and by whom a work was made.
This is Dürer's Melencolia, an engraving from fifteen fourteen.
Every tone in it is built from cut lines, because that is what the material allowed.
Ask of any drawing: what was it for?
A study, a record, a plan, or a finished work?
Study master drawings as working documents, not as trophies.
Leonardo drew this figure to test a rule of proportion, and wrote his notes around it.
Rembrandt used pen and brown ink, which cannot be erased, so every line is a decision — and where he changed his mind, he painted over it in white.
Dürer built these hands from fine parallel lines, set closer where the tone deepens.
Name the artists who influence you — crediting them shows integrity.
How do you judge a drawing — yours, or anyone else's?
Four steps, in order.
Describe: say only what is actually there.
Analyse: how are the parts arranged, and how do the marks work?
Interpret: what does it seem to be about?
Judge: does it do what it set out to do?
Most students jump straight to judging — and that is why their critiques stop at, I like it.
And say it with visual evidence.
Here, the head is fully modelled — hair, eyes, the soft tone of the face — while the coat is only a light, open line.
So your eye goes straight to the face.
That sentence names line, tone and composition.
It is evidence, not opinion.
Ask one focused question each time: does the focal point read?
Then change something — revision after critique is the development the rubric rewards.
Investigation has to be visible.
Scorers must see the investigation — a scorer cannot give credit for thinking they cannot see.
Document as you go, and date everything: date every page.
September: your first studies.
October: material tests, taped straight in.
November: a start that failed — keep it, it proves you tested something.
January: a before and after pair, worth more than any sentence.
That is the scored idea: over time.
Dated pages prove development without a word.
Three marks students throw away.
First, they never write the inquiry as one clear sentence and pin it above your desk, so nothing in the folder looks connected.
Write that sentence and pin it up.
Second, they submit finished work only.
Scorers must see the investigation: tests, failed starts and revision pairs are the evidence; nice drawings are not.
Third, they photograph the journal in April.
Photograph journal spreads as you go — rushed documentation looks like what it is.
Four things to keep.
One sentence: write the inquiry down, because every scoring row asks about it.
Open and visual: answerable through drawing, and worth ten works.
Show the work: tests, failed starts, revision pairs.
And date it — development over time is what is scored.
Four questions before you go.
Why is, I will draw hands, not an inquiry?
How do you test whether a question is broad enough?
Why date every journal page?
Is a failed start worth photographing?
Pause the video and answer out loud.
The answers are on the screen.
