Characters are pictures that grew up. Some still show their photos: the sun in a window, the crescent moon, the three peaks of a mountain. Others are built from components with jobs: three drops of water, a mouth box, a tree, hinting the topic, while the other half often hints the sound. Characters are Lego, not calligraphy, and the small set of useful parts makes the wall of strokes into buildings you can read.
The oldest characters still show their pictures. 日, the sun in a window, also means day. 月, a crescent, also means month. 水, flowing lines, water. 火, flames with sparks, fire. 人, walking legs, a person. 山, three peaks, a mountain. Draw each one with a finger while saying it aloud, because the sound sticks to the shape, and the shape begins to mean.
Many characters carry a meaning part on the left. Three drops of water say water: 河, river; 海, sea; 洗, to wash. A mouth box says mouth: 吃, to eat; 叫, to call; 唱, to sing. A tree says wood: 树, tree; 林, forest, two trees; 森, woods, three. Cover the left part of 海,吃 and 林, and guess the family: water, mouth, wood. The components carry the topic, and the other half often hints the sound, like 妈, mother, with female on the left and the sound 马 on the right.
In 妈, mother, the right part is a horse, but the horse is not a horse here: it is the sound 马. In 你, you, the right part hints the sound too. A sound part is a hint, not a promise, because accents drifted over centuries. Use it as a first guess when you meet a new character, then confirm with the pinyin before you trust it.
Watch out for two things. Components hint, they do not rule: 没, not have, carries the three drops of water, but it has nothing to do with water. And components are not standalone words: the three drops never stand alone, while 水, water, does. Learn each character with its pinyin and meaning as one card, never the shape alone.
Check yourself. Which picture character means fire? What topic do the three drops hint, and can you name one water-family character? In 妈, mother, which half hints the sound? And why is 林 written with two trees? If the parts sort themselves, the wall of strokes has become buildings you can read.
