On the bin, off the bin
- The DTFT $X(e^{j\omega}) = \sum x[n]e^{-j\omega n}$ is $2\pi$-periodic; sampling it at $N$ points gives the DFT — sampling in frequency makes the time signal periodic.

8-point DFT of a cosine on bin 1: $|X| = 4$ at bins 1 and 7, zero elsewhere ✓. Half a bin off: 2.40, 2.80, 1.19, 1.0 … across every bin — leakage.

An 8-point DFT of a cosine exactly on bin 1 shows —

A real cosine splits into two half-amplitude exponentials: N/2 = 4 at bins 1 and 7; on-bin, nothing leaks.
Resolution is a time decision
- Bins are $\Delta f = f_s/N$ wide: 1 Hz at 1 kHz costs $N = 1000$ — one second of data. Zero-padding interpolates the same spectrum; it resolves nothing new. A Hamming window drops the sidelobes from −13 dB to −43 dB.

At fs = 1 kHz, achieving 1 Hz bin resolution needs —

Δf = fs/N, so 1 Hz needs N = 1000 samples — resolution is bought with measurement time, never with padding or windows.
Zero-padding a 1000-sample record to 4096 points —

Padding draws the same underlying DTFT with more points — a smoother picture of exactly the same information.
