The first stage decides
- The noise figure $F$ obeys the cascade law $F = F_1 + (F_2-1)/G_1$: front-end gain divides every later noise. Thermal floor $-174\ dBm/Hz + 10\log_{10}B$.

LNA (F=1.5, G=10 dB) then mixer (F=3): F = 1.70 (2.30 dB). Swapped: 4.84 dB — 2.5 dB worse with the same parts ✓.

F = 1.5 + (3−1)/10 = 1.70. Swapping the blocks gives 3.05 — 2.5 dB worse for the same parts.

F is a power ratio: the cascade law adds linear ratios. Adding dB directly double-counts logarithms.
The floor you cannot dig below
- In a 180 kHz channel the floor is −121.4 dBm; with a 2.3 dB chain the effective floor is −119.1 dBm. Every budget closes in dB once the ratios are linear.

−174 dBm/Hz + 10·log₁₀(180000) = −174 + 52.6 = −121.4 dBm. The floor scales 10 dB per decade of bandwidth.
