The envelope carries the message
- Amplitude modulation (AM): $s(t) = A[1 + m\,x(t)]\cos(\omega_c t)$, modulation index $m \le 1$. The spectrum is the carrier plus two sidebands; the budget is exact: sidebands $= (m^{2}/2)P_{c}$, total $P_{c}(1+m^{2}/2)$.

100 W carrier at $m = 0.5$: sidebands 12.5 W, total 112.5 W, efficiency 11.1% ✓. At $m = 1$: 50/150 = 33.3% — two thirds of the power heats the antenna.

Sidebands = (m²/2)Pc = (0.25/2)·100 = 12.5 W; the total is 112.5 W and the efficiency 11.1%.
At the legal maximum m = 1 the AM efficiency is —

Sidebands 50 W of a 150 W total: one third useful, two thirds a carrier that carries no information.
The detector's RC window
- The envelope detector needs $1/\omega_c \ll \tau \ll \sqrt{1-m^{2}}/\omega_m$: between 1.6 µs and 31.8 µs for a 100 kHz carrier and 5 kHz message; $\tau = 10$ µs works. Over-modulation tightens the fast bound first.

Discharge slower than the carrier period (1/fc) yet faster than the message dip (sqrt(1-m²)/fm at large m): the 10 µs standard sits comfortably between.
