Ports hide the interior
- A two-port is defined only at its terminal pairs: $V_{1}, I_{1}$ in and $V_{2}, I_{2}$ out. ABCD uses current out of port 2 ($-I_{2}$); z-parameters use it into the port — pick one convention and stay.
- The series-Z block is $(1, Z; 0, 1)$ and the shunt-Y block $(1, 0; Y, 1)$; a cascade multiplies the matrices, in order.

Shunt-Y then series-Z with $Z = j10$, $Y = -j0.1$: the product is $(1, Z; Y, 1+YZ)$ with $1 + YZ = 2$ and determinant $AD - BC = 2 - j10 \cdot (-j0.1) = 1$ — the reciprocal-network signature.

Matrix product (1,0;Y,1)(1,Z;0,1) = (1, Z; Y, 1+YZ). Order matters - matrix multiplication is not commutative.
Reciprocity reads in the numbers
- Converting to z-parameters ($z_{11} = A/C$, $z_{12} = Δ/C$, $z_{21} = 1/C$, $z_{22} = D/C$), reciprocity shows up as $z_{12} = z_{21}$ — visible, not assumed; controlled sources break it.
- With port 2 open ($I_{2} = 0$), $V_{1} = z_{11}I_{1}$: the open-circuit input is one z-parameter read directly.
The L-section converts to $z_{11} = z_{12} = z_{21} = j10$ Ω, $z_{22} = j20$ Ω (machine-verified): symmetric off the diagonal, asymmetric overall — the shunt arm sits at the input side. With port 2 open the input sees a pure inductive 10 Ω.

Reciprocity is off-diagonal symmetry z12 = z21 (the L-section: both j10 ohm). z11 = z22 is symmetry of the NETWORK, a different property; controlled sources break reciprocity.
With port 2 open (I2 = 0), the input voltage is

Open output kills the I2 term, leaving V1 = z11 I1 - one z-parameter measured by a single open-circuit experiment.
