The missing link
- "Most deserts receive little rain. ___, the Atacama receives almost none in some years." Choices: However, Indeed, For example, Therefore.
- Choosing a transition 衔接词 is a logic question. Decide how the second sentence relates to the first before you look at the words.
Five relationships
- Contrast: however, nevertheless, by contrast, yet. Cause / result: therefore, consequently, as a result, thus.
- Example: for example, for instance. Addition / emphasis 强调: moreover, furthermore, indeed, in fact. Sequence: then, subsequently, finally.
Which relationship?
Group transitions by the logical relationship they express.
Therefore, consequently and as a result all signal a ____.

They introduce an effect of what came before.
Read both sentences
- In the desert example, the second sentence gives an extreme case of "little rain": that is emphasis or an example, so Indeed (or "In fact") fits. "However" would wrongly signal a contrast.
- Test your choice by reading the two sentences aloud with it; the logic should sound natural.
"The drug passed early trials. ___, it was approved only after two more years of testing." The second sentence contrasts with the hopeful first one: Nevertheless / However. "Therefore" would wrongly make the delay a result of passing.
“The company cut its prices by 20%. ___, sales doubled within a month.” Which transition is most logical?

The second sentence describes a result of the price cut.
“Many birds migrate south in winter. ___, some species, such as the robin, often stay in the same area all year.” Which transition is most logical?

Staying all year contrasts with migrating.
Close relatives
- "Similarly" adds a parallel case; "likewise" means the same. "In contrast" sets two things side by side as different; "however" opposes an expectation.
- "Thus" and "therefore" introduce a conclusion; "for this reason" also points back to a cause.
“Octopuses can change colour to match their surroundings. ___, cuttlefish can alter both their colour and the texture of their skin.” Which transition is most logical?

A second animal with a parallel ability.
Traps
- Choosing by sound: formal words like "consequently" are wrong if the second sentence is not a result.
- Punctuation is separate: transitions like however need a semicolon or full stop before them when joining two clauses: "…trials; however, it…".
“The test was hard; however, most students passed.” punctuates the transition correctly.

True. Two independent clauses joined by however need a semicolon (or full stop) before it and a comma after it.
Recap
- Decide the relationship — contrast, result, example, addition, sequence — then choose the transition.
- Read the pair with your choice to check the logic; punctuation rules still apply.
- emphasis: Special importance given to a point.
