Notes with a goal
- Notes about two rivers give their lengths, sources and the countries they cross. The question: "The student wants to emphasize 强调 the difference in length between the two rivers. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes?"
- The goal is specific — difference in length — so the right sentence needs both lengths and a comparison.
Turn the goal into a requirement 要求
- Goal words map to content: "emphasize a similarity" → both items + what they share; "introduce X to an unfamiliar audience" → what X is, briefly; "explain an advantage" → the benefit and why.
- Write the requirement before reading the choices: "needs river A's length, river B's length, and a comparison word".
Goal: introduce the scientist Rosalind Franklin to an audience unfamiliar with her. Which choice best meets the goal?
An introduction says who she was and why she matters.
A goal to “emphasize a difference” requires information about ____ items being compared.
A comparison needs both sides.
Check each choice
- Does it include everything the goal needs? Does it include only accurate information from the notes? Does it avoid relationships the notes do not state?
- A sentence that lists both rivers' sources is accurate but does not meet the length goal.
Notes: Nile 6,650 km; Amazon about 6,400 km. Goal: emphasize the difference. Good: "At 6,650 km, the Nile is about 250 km longer than the Amazon." Weak: "The Nile and the Amazon are two of the world's longest rivers." (similarity, not difference)
Does it meet the goal?
Judge whether a sentence achieves a specific rhetorical goal.
Notes: The Pantheon was completed around 125 CE. The Colosseum was completed in 80 CE. Both are in Rome. Goal: emphasize a similarity between the two buildings. Which choice best meets the goal?
A similarity needs both buildings and what they share (location, age).
Put the notes-question method in order.
The goal decides everything.
Don't invent links
- If the notes say a scientist won a prize and later moved to Paris, a choice that says she moved because of the prize invents a cause.
- Only connect facts in ways the notes support.
Notes say an engineer studied in Berlin and later designed a bridge. A choice saying “Because she studied in Berlin, she designed a bridge” accurately uses the notes.
The notes do not state a cause; the choice invents one.
Traps
- Accurate but off-goal: true to the notes, but it does a different job.
- Over-packed: it includes the goal information plus irrelevant details, which weakens the emphasis; the best choice is focused.
Recap
- Translate the goal into a requirement, then pick the choice that meets it fully and accurately.
- Do not invent causes or relationships; prefer the focused sentence.
- emphasize: To give special importance to a point.
- requirement: Something a task says you must do.
