| radius/ˈreɪdɪəs/ | The distance from the centre of a circle to its edge. |
| sector/ˈsektə/ | A region of a circle bounded by two radii and the arc between them. |
| arc length/ɑːk leŋθ/ | The distance along a curved part of a circle or another curve. |
Hidden circle
- The SAT gives $x^2 + y^2 - 6x + 4y - 12 = 0$ and asks for the radius 半径 of the circle.
- The equation hides the centre and radius; completing the square reveals them.
Circle equations
- Standard form: $(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2$, centre $(h, k)$, radius $r$.
- Complete the square: $x^2 - 6x = (x - 3)^2 - 9$ and $y^2 + 4y = (y + 2)^2 - 4$. So $(x - 3)^2 + (y + 2)^2 = 12 + 9 + 4 = 25$: centre $(3, -2)$, radius $5$.

Completing the square gives a circle centred at (3, −2) with radius 5
Centre and radius
Read the centre and radius from a circle equation.
What is the radius of the circle $x^2 + y^2 + 8x - 2y - 8 = 0$?
Độ khó 2/5 · 140 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
$(x + 4)^2 + (y - 1)^2 = 8 + 16 + 1 = 25$, so $r = 5$.
Arcs and sectors 扇形
- A central angle $\theta$ (degrees) gives arc length 弧长 $\dfrac{\theta}{360} \times 2\pi r$ and sector area $\dfrac{\theta}{360} \times \pi r^2$.
- In radians: arc length $= r\theta$; $180° = \pi$ radians, so $60° = \dfrac{\pi}{3}$.
Radius 6, central angle $120°$: arc length $= \dfrac{1}{3} \times 12\pi = 4\pi$; sector area $= \dfrac{1}{3} \times 36\pi = 12\pi$.
A circle has radius 9. What is the length of the arc cut off by a central angle of 40°?

$\dfrac{40}{360} \times 18\pi = 2\pi$.
Tangents, inscribed angles, unit circle
- A tangent is perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact. An inscribed angle is half the central angle on the same arc.
- On the unit circle, the point at angle $\theta$ is $(\cos\theta, \sin\theta)$; $\sin\dfrac{\pi}{6} = \dfrac{1}{2}$, $\cos\dfrac{\pi}{3} = \dfrac{1}{2}$.
A central angle measures 110°. What is an inscribed angle on the same arc, in degrees?

This property is often used to form right triangles.
Traps
- Radius versus $r^2$: in $(x - 3)^2 + (y + 2)^2 = 25$, the radius is 5, not 25.
- Centre signs: $(x + 4)^2$ means $h = -4$.
What is the centre of $(x + 2)^2 + (y - 7)^2 = 16$?
Độ khó 1/5 · 100 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
$x + 2 = x - (-2)$.
Recap
- Complete the square to reach $(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2$; read centre $(h, k)$ and radius $r$.
- Arc $= \dfrac{\theta}{360} \cdot 2\pi r$, sector $= \dfrac{\theta}{360} \cdot \pi r^2$; radians: arc $= r\theta$.
