Hold the face, or cut to it
- A woman comes in at night and stops above a sealed letter. A floorboard creaks before we see her face.
- The useful question is what that order lets a viewer know, and what it still withholds.
Name the choice, not the mood
- Mise-en-scène 场面调度 is what has been arranged inside the frame: her coat still on, one lamp, the letter unopened.
- Diegetic sound 叙事内声音 is produced in the story world, such as the kettle and then the creak. Non-diegetic sound 叙事外声音 is added commentary, such as a low tone no object in the room produces.

- Beat 1 is a wide view: she stands at the edge, coat on, not looking at the letter. Beat 2 is a high-angle close-up: her hand stops, and the seal stays unbroken.
- Beat 3 holds on that hand while a creak comes from off screen. Beat 4 cuts to her face only after the creak, and the low tone enters with the face.

Write one reading, then weaken it
- Choose framing, editing or sound. Quote the beat that supports it, and name a fact in the sequence that the reading does not prove.
- A stronger paragraph says what another edit or a visible sound source would change. "It creates suspense" does not say which choice does the work.

Separate framing, editing and sound. Tie each claim to one beat, and say what that beat still withholds. This original sequence is practice, not the prescribed film.
