Positions, explanations, presentations
-
This HSK 5 teaching lesson practises positions, explanations and short presentations. A half-minute turn is a local rehearsal choice, not an official timing rule or level judgement.
-
Same method: hear → say → record → compare. Nothing is scored; the recording stays on this page.
-
Before you start: Recall evidence and qualifications and opinions/plans. Distinguish a proposal from a measured result, and a general tendency from a claim about everyone.
A small voluntary survey reports several favourable opinions. Which claim preserves its limited evidence?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Voluntary opinions from a small group do not establish all residents’ views or a measured effect. Preserve what was reported and what remains unknown.
Positions with to think / believe认为
- I / me我to think / believe认为 + position: I / me我to think / believe认为to learn学一门foreign language外语degree / adjective linker很useful有用。
- to think / believe认为 commonly presents a judgement or considered view. to feel / think觉得 can also express a serious opinion; support, wording and context determine how convincing either sounds.
- Practice box 1: record the position statement.
Hear the model, then record the position statement.
认为 + position: a stance you are ready to defend.
Supporting and opposing
- Take a side: I / me我to be in favor of支持 / I / me我to oppose反对 + this这个point of view观点,because因为 …
- The reason must fit the side: I / me我to oppose反对this这个point of view观点,because因为circumstances情况not have / haven't没有like that那么simple简单。
- ❌ agreeing with a because因为 that argues the opposite — the two halves must point the same way.
- Practice box 2: record the opposition with its reason.
Work through a decision: Build a short proposal from claim, relevant support and a stated limit. If the evidence is only volunteer feedback, say whose feedback it is. Then explain what a trial could test; do not describe your recommended trial as a completed success.
Compare a near miss: generally speaking一般来说 can qualify a tendency, but it cannot convert a few comments into a representative survey. generally speaking总的来说 organises an overall view and in my opinion在我看来 marks a viewpoint; none removes the need to match evidence and scope.
Oppose with a fitting reason. Record both halves.
The reason must serve the side you took; check the two halves agree.
A club wants to try a quiet study hour, but only five volunteers have commented. Which proposal best respects that evidence?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The second proposal treats a trial as a way to learn more. The first expands five people’s views to everyone; the third predicts a proven effect before the trial exists.
Explaining in order
- The frame: first (of all)首先 …, then / after然后 …, final最后 …
- first (of all)首先preparation准备good好(raw) material材料,then / after然后according to按照procedure步骤to make做,final最后inspection检查outcome结果。 — every step lands on its marker.
- Practice box 3: record the ordered explanation.
Explain a process in order. Record it.
The markers are the map; say them like headings.
Match the marker to the claim
- generally speaking一般来说 marks a general tendency: generally speaking一般来说,early to bed, early to rise早睡早起to / towards / correct对the body身体to have / there is有benefit好处。generally speaking总的来说 introduces an overall view; in my opinion在我看来 identifies a personal viewpoint. They do not all perform the same hedging function.
- Limiting a claim can leave room for exceptions, but a hedge does not make an unsupported claim true. Check whether your evidence supports the tendency and its scope.
- Practice box 4: record the hedged sentence.
Hedge the claim. Record the sentence.
一般来说 presents a general tendency and allows for exceptions. It does not prove the claim or remove the need for evidence and a suitable scope.
The presentation frame
- Open: today今天I / me我want / think / miss想to discuss谈谈 … — today I'd like to talk about …
- Close: that level or higher以上exactly就是I / me我(modifier / structural particle)的way of looking at a thing看法,to thank谢谢everyone大家。 — that's my view; thank you, everyone.
- Between them: position → reason → example. Practice box 5 opens a talk; box 6 closes one.
Open the presentation. Record the line.
今天我想谈谈… names your topic in one breath — then deliver it.
Your turn: a thirty-second position
- Pick a real opinion about study, health or city life: position → reason → hedged limit → closing line.
- Practice boxes 5 and 6 are your frame — put your own position between them when you record.
- Record twice: once reading your notes, once from memory. Time yourself.
Close YOUR position talk — position, reason, hedge, then this closer. Record twice.
The opening and closing organise a talk; they do not make every position well supported. Compare your reason and example with the claim before retrying.
Original fictional source card: 学习小组想把周五下午的一小时改为安静自习。五名自愿发言的学生表示支持,其他成员还没有发表意见。教室可以使用,但下周能否继续借用还不确定。Give the group a Mandarin proposal: state a position, use the reported support, identify a limitation and explain what should be checked before a longer arrangement. Speak in Mandarin. Use brief notes rather than reading a prepared answer.
Written comparison supports your own replay and revision. No automatic correctness, pronunciation score or exam-level judgement is provided.
Keep the voice working
- Tomorrow, before you reopen this page: state one position for thirty seconds — aloud, timed.
- For separate task options, visit Chinese practice. This speaking rehearsal does not confer a practice-test score.
- Next speaking lesson: argument, summary and formal presentation.
Later recall: Tomorrow, make a new proposal from a short evidence note and state one unresolved condition. A few days later, change one condition and revise your recommendation for a different audience. Check scope and status before polishing the opening and closing.
New audience/source card: 图书馆准备试行周末延长开放两小时。工作人员担心增加值班负担,部分学生希望有更多安静学习时间。经费尚未确定。Address the library team in Mandarin: acknowledge both concerns, recommend a next step and state what remains conditional. Then suppose the funding is confirmed but staffing is still unresolved; revise the recommendation without erasing the staffing issue. Speak in Mandarin. Use brief notes rather than reading a prepared answer.
