Breakfast and the news
- Every morning your grandfather reads the paper while he drinks his tea.
- (coll.) father's father爷爷while一边to drink tea喝茶while一边to see看newspaper报纸。 — "Grandpa reads the paper while drinking tea."
while一边 + Verb 1 + while一边 + Verb 2
- Subject + while一边 A + while一边 B = do A and B at the same time. Each while一边 goes before its own verb.
- Both actions belong to the same person, and both are activities that can last: listen to听, to see看, walk走, chat聊, variant of 吃吃.
I我while一边listen to听music音乐(at the same time)一边do做homework作业。
Complete: “She sings while she cooks.” 她____做饭一边唱歌。

一边 A 一边 B — the first 一边 goes before 做饭.
Shorter while边…while边…
- With one-syllable verbs, speakers often shorten it: we我们while边walk走while边chat聊。 — "We chatted as we walked."
- It also describes the scene in a story: he / him他while一边to cry哭while一边variant of 说说 — "He spoke while crying."

The short form 边…边… fits one-syllable verbs.
Actions, not states
- Use action verbs that can happen together; while一边to be / is是student学生while一边to be / is是teacher老师 is wrong. For two roles, use already既…both又… or also也.
- Keep one subject before the first while一边: he / him他while一边variant of 吃吃while一边to see看, not while一边he / him他variant of 吃吃while一边to see看.
Which sentence is correct?

Subject + 一边 action + 一边 action. 是 is not an action that can run alongside another.
while一边…while一边… versus both又…both又…
- while一边…while一边… is two actions at the same moment: while一边sing唱while一边dance跳.
- both又…both又… describes two qualities or a lively scene: both又sing唱both又dance跳 — "singing and dancing (all over the place)."
the children孩子们both又sing唱and又dance跳。
一边…一边… and 又…又… are always interchangeable.

一边…一边… joins two simultaneous actions; 又…又… usually joins two qualities.
