-
I / me我to be / is是student学生。 Wǒ shì xuésheng. — I am a student.
-
she / her她to be / is是teacher老师。 Tā shì lǎoshī. — She is a teacher. Learn student学生 and teacher老师 as whole words.

Correct a wrong guess
- I / me我no不是teacher老师。 Wǒ bú shì lǎoshī. — I am not a teacher.
- Put not不 before to be / is是: I / me我 no不是 teacher老师. Then give the correct identity: I / me我to be / is是student学生。
A: you你to be / is是teacher老师(yes/no ?)吗? B: no不是,I / me我to be / is是student学生。 — Are you a teacher? No, I am a student. The next lesson teaches (yes/no ?)吗.
Work through a decision: For a fictional student, first choose the identity student学生, then link it to I / me我 with to be / is是:I / me我to be / is是student学生。To deny being a teacher, put not不 immediately before to be / is是:I / me我no不是teacher老师。The denied role and the actual role need not be the same word.
Compare a near miss: I / me我no不是teacher老师 denies being a teacher; it does not by itself prove that the person is a student. Add I / me我to be / is是student学生 if that is the role you want to state. I / me我variant of 叫叫student学生 uses the naming frame and does not express the intended identity.

我不是老师 denies the wrong role and 我是学生 states the given role. The other pairs assign the opposite identity. Check the word after 不是 separately from the word after 是.
Listen for not不
- Listen and decide: teacher or not a teacher?
- not不 sounds rising before the fourth-tone to be / is是: bú shì. You may see the dictionary spelling bù; the written character is unchanged.

Say something true
- Say I / me我to be / is是student学生 if it is true, or practise with a fictional student role. Then deny a different identity: I / me我no不是teacher老师。
- Ask a partner to point at either a student or teacher picture. Say a full sentence about the person; use he / him他 tā — he or she / her她 tā — she.
I / me我to be / is是student学生 states an identity. I / me我no不是teacher老师 denies one. Keep not不 immediately before to be / is是 in this pattern.
Next: ask a yes-or-no question.
Later recall: Tomorrow, state and deny two new fictional roles without the model. Explain what I / me我no不是teacher老师 does and does not establish. Repeat a few days later with the roles swapped; revisit “Correct a wrong guess” if you accidentally assign the denied role.
