Letters are not enough
-
qī seven七 — seven and chī variant of 吃吃 — eat begin differently. Listen before attempting them.
-
Pinyin q is not English q. Pinyin x is not the English ks sound.
-
Before you start: Recall pinyin’s job and tones in phrases. This lesson separates sound production from recognising written spelling conventions.
Pinyin qī should be read by:
Độ khó 1/5 · 100 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
Pinyin represents Mandarin sounds; use the example as the model.
You meet an unfamiliar pinyin letter. Which first step is most useful for learning its Mandarin sound?
Độ khó 1/5 · 100 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
A Mandarin model gives the intended sound. Pinyin letters need their Mandarin values; removing a tone mark loses information without supplying meaning.
Practise two sound groups
- j / q / x: practise fowl鸡 jī — chicken, seven七 qī — seven, west西 xī — west. Keep the tongue relatively forward.
- zh / ch / sh: practise to know知 zhī — know, variant of 吃吃 chī — eat, teacher师 shī — teacher. The tongue position is farther back.
What tone number is qī?

The horizontal mark shows first tone.
Match the examples.

The different initials and vowels distinguish these syllables.
Notice the airflow
- Compare jī and qī: q has a stronger puff of air. A small tissue held near your mouth can make the contrast visible.
- Compare zhī and chī the same way. Copy the recording rather than adding an English r sound.
seven七 qī and variant of 吃吃 chī differ in their starting sound and the vowel quality. Practise the full syllables.
Work through a decision: For jī and qī, keep attention on the starting consonant: q has a stronger puff of air than j in this contrast. For qī and chī, also compare tongue position and vowel quality. A tissue can help you notice airflow, but it cannot judge the whole pronunciation.
Compare a near miss: A stronger puff is useful for j/q, but it does not explain every difference between qī and chī. Written u after q represents ü, so applying one English “oo” sound to every u spelling misses the convention.
Written-spelling practice: compare nǚ and qù. Which account fits the spelling convention taught here?
Độ khó 1/5 · 100 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
nǚ writes the dots explicitly. After q, u represents ü without the dots. This checks a spelling convention; producing that vowel needs spoken comparison too.
Meet ü and the missing dots
- archaic variant of 汝女 nǚ — woman uses ü: keep the tongue near an “ee” position while rounding the lips.
- After j, q, and x, written u represents this ü sound: to go去 qù — go. After n and l, the dots distinguish ü from u.
Pinyin i is not pronounced identically after every initial. Compare xī, shī, and nǐ by ear instead of forcing one English vowel onto them.
Which written syllable shows ü explicitly?
Độ khó 1/5 · 100 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
nǚ retains the dots after n.
The u in 去 qù has the same vowel as ordinary u in nù.
Độ khó 1/5 · 100 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
After q, written u represents ü.
Fresh written pair: xù / lù. Which description fits the vowel spelling?
Độ khó 1/5 · 100 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
After x, written u represents ü. After l, the dots are needed to distinguish ü from u, so lù has ordinary u. The letter u does not have one vowel value in every pinyin context.
Practise one contrast at a time
- Alternate qī / chī, then jī / qī. Listen back to a recording and choose one difference to improve.
- Next: recognise and build characters.
Pinyin letters have Mandarin sound values. Listen to whole syllables; practise tongue position, airflow, and ü.
Later recall: Tomorrow, recall the j/q contrast and the missing-dot convention without reading. A few days later, inspect a different x + u spelling and record the isolated-word order again. Revisit airflow for the consonant contrast and the ü step for the spelling question.
Speak Mandarin: choose the familiar isolated words 鸡 and 七. Record 鸡—七—鸡, then change the order to 七—鸡—七. Stop and replay before opening written guidance. Compare with the original word sound buttons. Then choose one feature to retry; the page does not measure airflow, tongue position or pronunciation quality.
Comparison records a self-review only. It does not establish pronunciation, handwriting or general proficiency.
