The Laplacian 拉普拉斯算子 belongs to the coordinates
- For $f(r) = 1/r$, writing $\nabla^2f = f''$ gives $2/r^3$. The correct radial Laplacian gives 0 — the potential of a point charge is harmonic away from it.
- GRE mathematical-methods questions test coordinate operators, separation of variables 分离变量法 and stable numerical updates.
Radial operators
- Spherical, radial only: $\nabla^2f = f'' + \dfrac{2}{r}f'$; divergence of $A_r\hat r$: $\dfrac{1}{r^2}\dfrac{d}{dr}(r^2A_r)$.
- Checks: $\hat r/r^2$ has zero divergence for $r > 0$; $1/r$ has zero Laplacian for $r > 0$; $r^2$ has Laplacian 6.
Find $\nabla^2(r^2)$ in three dimensions.

In spherical coordinates $\nabla^2 f = f'' + (2/r)f'$; for $r^2$ that is $2 + (2/r)(2r) = 6$.
For $r > 0$, $\nabla \cdot (\hat r/r^2)$ equals

For a radial field, $\nabla\cdot\vec F = \tfrac{1}{r^2}\tfrac{d}{dr}(r^2F_r)$, and $r^2 \cdot 1/r^2 = 1$ is constant, so the divergence is 0 for $r > 0$.
Separation of variables
- String fixed at both ends: $u = X(x)T(t)$, $X''/X = T''/(c^2T) = -k^2$. Boundaries force $X = \sin(n\pi x/L)$, $f_n = \dfrac{nc}{2L}$.
- $L = 0.5$ m, $c = 100$ m/s: $f_1 = 100$ Hz. Every mode must satisfy the boundary conditions before summing.
A string 0.8 m long with wave speed 240 m/s. Third-harmonic frequency in Hz?
Độ khó 2/5 · 140 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
Harmonics of a string are $nv/2L$: $3 \times 240/1.6 = 450$ Hz.
Explicit Euler stability 稳定性
- $y' = -\lambda y$: $y_{n+1} = (1 - \lambda h)y_n$. Stable for $|1 - \lambda h| \le 1$, i.e. $0 < h \le 2/\lambda$.
- $\lambda = 10$/s: $h = 0.25$ s multiplies by $-1.5$ each step and diverges with alternating sign.
How does Euler behave?
Read the behaviour of y′ = −λy from the factor 1 − λh.
Largest stable explicit Euler step for $y' = -50y$, in s?
Độ khó 2/5 · 140 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
Explicit Euler multiplies $y$ by $1 - 50h$ each step; stability needs $|1 - 50h| \le 1$, so $h \le 2/50 = 0.04$ s.
Stable is not accurate
- Check units ($\lambda h$ dimensionless), refine $h$ and compare, and test a case with a known answer.
$y' = -4y$, $y(0) = 8$, to $t = 1$: $h = 0.2$ gives $8 \times 0.2^5 = 0.00256$; $h = 0.1$ gives 0.048; $h = 0.05$ gives 0.092 — approaching the exact $8e^{-4} \approx 0.147$. First-order error shrinks roughly in proportion to $h$.
A numerical run that stays bounded has converged to the true solution.

Stability is not accuracy; refine h.
Recap
- Use the operator of the coordinate system: $f'' + 2f'/r$ for radial functions.
- Separated modes must satisfy the boundaries; $f_n = nc/2L$.
- Euler: $h \le 2/\lambda$ for stability; refine for accuracy.
- Laplacian: The sum of second partial derivatives, written as del squared.
