A small difference of large numbers
- Uranium-238 and its decay products differ by only 0.0046 u — yet that is 4.3 MeV released per decay.
- GRE nuclear questions test $Q$-values, balance of charge and nucleon number, activity 活度, decay chains and the binding curve.
$Q$-values
- $Q = (m_{\text{initial}} - m_{\text{final}})c^2$: the mass defect 质量亏损 times $c^2$, with 1 u = 931.5 MeV. $Q > 0$ releases energy.
- Atomic masses include electrons: they cancel for α and β⁻ decay; β⁺ and electron capture need explicit electron masses.
²³⁸U → ²³⁴Th + α: $(238.0508 - 234.0436 - 4.0026) \times 931.5 \approx 4.28$ MeV, mostly carried by the light alpha. D + T → ⁴He + n: $0.0189 \times 931.5 \approx 17.6$ MeV.
A decay has mass decrease 0.0050 u. $Q$ in MeV (two decimal places)?

$Q = 0.0050 \times 931.5 = 4.66$ MeV.
Balance first
- Charge and nucleon number: ¹⁴N + α → ¹⁷O + p checks $7 + 2 = 8 + 1$ and $14 + 4 = 17 + 1$.
What balances the reaction?

²⁷Al + α → ³⁰P + ?

Charge 13 + 2 = 15; nucleons 27 + 4 = 30 + 1.
Activity
- $A = \lambda N$, $\lambda = \ln2/T_{1/2}$, 1 Bq = 1 decay/s. $T_{1/2} = 2$ h, $N = 6\times10^{12}$: $A \approx 5.8\times10^8$ Bq.
- Equal activities need not mean equal numbers of atoms.
$T_{1/2} = 1$ h and $N = 3.6\times10^{12}$. Activity in units of $10^8$ Bq (two decimal places)?
Độ khó 2/5 · 140 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
$A = \lambda N = (\ln 2/3600) \times 3.6\times10^{12} = 6.93\times10^8$ Bq.
Fraction of activity remaining after four half-lives (decimal)?

Activity halves each half-life: $(1/2)^4 = 1/16 = 0.0625$.
Two samples with equal activities can contain different numbers of radioactive atoms.

True. Activity is $A = \lambda N$, so a sample with a larger decay constant needs fewer atoms for the same activity.
Chains and the binding curve
- $A \to B \to C$: $\dfrac{dN_B}{dt} = \lambda_AN_A - \lambda_BN_B$. A long-lived parent gives secular equilibrium 长期平衡: $A_B \to A_A$.
- Binding per nucleon peaks near iron, so fission (about $(8.5 - 7.6) \times 240 \approx 200$ MeV) and fusion both release energy.
Recap
- $Q = \Delta m \times 931.5$ MeV/u; track electrons.
- Balance charge and nucleon number before computing.
- $A = \lambda N$; secular equilibrium equalises activities.
- mass defect: The difference between the mass of separate parts and the bound system.
- secular equilibrium: The state in which a short-lived daughter’s activity equals its long-lived parent’s.
