| envelope/ˈenvələʊp/ | In this two-slit pattern, the broad single-slit diffraction factor that modulates the finer interference fringes; its zeros can suppress interference orders. |

| far field/fɑː fiːld/ | The region far enough from an aperture that rays to a point are nearly parallel. |
Right path difference, no light
- Two slits 0.50 mm apart, each 0.10 mm wide. The fifth-order interference maximum should be bright — but it lands exactly on a single-slit zero and vanishes.
- GRE diffraction questions test the single-slit envelope 包络线, the double-slit product and missing orders 缺级.
The single-slit envelope
- $\dfrac{I}{I_0} = \left(\dfrac{\sin\beta}{\beta}\right)^2$, $\beta = \dfrac{\pi a\sin\theta}{\lambda}$. At $\theta = 0$ the limit is 1.
- Zeros at $a\sin\theta = m\lambda$, $m \ne 0$. At $\beta = \pi/2$: $4/\pi^2 \approx 0.405$.
Single-slit intensity relative to the centre at $\beta = \pi/2$ (three decimal places)?

Single-slit intensity is $(\sin\beta/\beta)^2$; at $\beta = \pi/2$ this is $(1/(\pi/2))^2 = 4/\pi^2 = 0.405$.
Widths on a screen
- Small angles: first zeros at $y = \pm L\lambda/a$, central width $2L\lambda/a$. Large angles: $\theta = \arcsin(m\lambda/a)$, $y = L\tan\theta$.
- Far field 远场 needs $L \gg a^2/\lambda$ (or a focusing lens).
λ = 600 nm, slit width 0.12 mm, screen 1.5 m away. Central maximum width in mm?

2 × 1.5 × 600×10⁻⁹ / 1.2×10⁻⁴ m.
Two slits: envelope × fringes
- $\dfrac{I}{I_0} = \left(\dfrac{\sin\beta}{\beta}\right)^2\cos^2\alpha$, $\alpha = \dfrac{\pi d\sin\theta}{\lambda}$. Fringes at $d\sin\theta = n\lambda$, spacing $\lambda L/d$.
- Larger $d$ narrows the fringes; larger $a$ narrows the envelope.
$\lambda = 500$ nm, $a = 0.10$ mm, $d = 0.50$ mm, $L = 2$ m: envelope zeros at ±10 mm, fringe spacing 2 mm. $d/a = 5$, so orders ±5 are missing, and nine fringes ($n = -4$ to $4$) sit in the central envelope.
The slit separation $d$ doubles while the slit width stays the same. Then

Spacing λL/d; envelope set by a.
Missing orders
- Order $n$ is missing when $n = m\,d/a$. With $d/a = r$ an integer, orders $\pm r, \pm2r, \dots$ vanish and the central envelope holds $2r - 1$ fringes.
Which orders appear?
Combine fringe orders with envelope zeros.
Same slits, separation 0.36 mm. How many bright fringes lie inside the central envelope?

The first single-slit minimum falls at the 3rd double-slit order ($d/a = 3$), so the central envelope holds orders 0, ±1 and ±2: 5 bright fringes.
When $d/a = 4$, the fourth-order fringe is visible at the edge of the central envelope.

It falls on an envelope zero.
Recap
- Single slit: $(\sin\beta/\beta)^2$, zeros at $a\sin\theta = m\lambda$.
- Double slit = envelope × $\cos^2\alpha$; spacing $\lambda L/d$.
- $d/a = r$: orders $\pm r$ missing, $2r - 1$ fringes in the centre.
- far field: The region far enough from an aperture that rays to a point are nearly parallel.
