Battery on or off?
- Slide a dielectric 电介质 into a charged capacitor. If the battery was disconnected, the voltage falls; if it stays connected, the charge rises. Same slab, opposite outcomes.
- GRE material-fields questions test $\mathbf P$, $\mathbf D$, bound charge, fixed-$Q$ versus fixed-$V$, and $\mathbf M$, $\mathbf H$, $\mathbf B$.
Polarisation 极化强度 and $\mathbf D$
- $\mathbf P$ = dipole moment per volume (C/m²). $\mathbf D = \varepsilon_0\mathbf E + \mathbf P$ with $\nabla \cdot \mathbf D = \rho_{\text{free}}$.
- Bound charge: $\rho_b = -\nabla \cdot \mathbf P$, $\sigma_b = \mathbf P \cdot \hat n$. Linear dielectric: $\mathbf D = \varepsilon_0\varepsilon_r\mathbf E$. The field inside is reduced, not zero.
A linear dielectric cancels the electric field inside it completely, as a conductor does.

A dielectric only partly screens the field: $E$ falls by a factor $\varepsilon_r$. Only a conductor makes it zero.
Fixed $Q$ or fixed $V$
- Fill the gap: $C$ becomes $\varepsilon_rC$. Disconnected (fixed $Q$): $V$, $E$ and $U = Q^2/2C$ fall by $\varepsilon_r$. Connected (fixed $V$): $Q$ and $U = \tfrac12CV^2$ rise by $\varepsilon_r$.
$\varepsilon_r = 4$, fixed free density $\sigma$: $D = \sigma$, $E = \dfrac{\sigma}{4\varepsilon_0}$, $P = \varepsilon_0(4 - 1)E = \tfrac34\sigma$. Voltage and energy drop to a quarter.
Up, down or unchanged?
Track capacitor quantities at fixed charge and at fixed voltage.
Fixed free density $\sigma$, $\varepsilon_r = 5$. Polarisation $P$ as a fraction of $\sigma$?

In a linear dielectric $P = \varepsilon_0\chi_e E$ and $D = \sigma$, which gives $P = \sigma(\varepsilon_r - 1)/\varepsilon_r = 4/5$ of $\sigma$.
A charged capacitor is disconnected, then filled with $\varepsilon_r = 3$. Its stored energy

U = Q²/2C with C tripled.
With the battery still connected, filling with $\varepsilon_r = 3$ makes the plate charge
Độ khó 1/5 · 100 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
With the battery connected, $V$ stays fixed while $C$ becomes $3C$, so $Q = CV$ triples.
Interfaces
- Normal $D$ jumps by free surface charge; tangential $E$ is continuous. So normal $E$ changes when $\varepsilon$ changes.
Magnetisation 磁化强度
- $\mathbf M$ = magnetic moment per volume (A/m). $\mathbf B = \mu_0(\mathbf H + \mathbf M)$; linear: $\mathbf M = \chi_m\mathbf H$. Long solenoid: $H = nI$.
- $H = 400$ A/m, $\chi_m = 0.5$: $M = 200$ A/m, $B = \mu_0 \cdot 600 \approx 0.754$ mT. Ferromagnets saturate and show hysteresis.
$H = 1000$ A/m and $\chi_m = 1$. $B$ in mT (three decimal places)?
Độ khó 2/5 · 140 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
$B = \mu_0(1 + \chi_m)H = 4\pi\times10^{-7} \times 2000 = 2.513\times10^{-3}$ T, which is 2.513 mT.
Recap
- $\nabla \cdot \mathbf D$ = free charge; $\nabla \cdot \mathbf E$ = total charge over $\varepsilon_0$.
- Disconnected: $Q$ fixed, $V$ and $U$ fall. Connected: $V$ fixed, $Q$ and $U$ rise.
- $\mathbf B = \mu_0(\mathbf H + \mathbf M)$.
- polarisation: Electric dipole moment per unit volume of a material.
