Đã giới thiệu| English | Ý nghĩa |
|---|---|
| Hall effect/hɔːl ɪˈfekt/ | The development of a transverse voltage when a magnetic field deflects moving charge carriers in a current-carrying material. |
| binding energy per nucleon/ˈbaɪndɪŋ ˈenədʒi pɜː ˈnjuːklɪən/ | năng lượng liên kết trên mỗi nucleon |
| lepton/ˈleptɒn/ | Fundamental particles that do not participate in the strong interaction, including electrons and neutrinos. |
Electrons or holes?
- Two samples have the same conductivity. A Hall measurement — with field and current directions fixed — shows opposite signs: one conducts by electrons, the other by holes.
- GRE nuclear and particle questions test binding per nucleon, particle families, conservation laws and the Hall effect
Binding per nucleon
- Binding energy = mass deficit $\times c^2$. Compare the binding energy per nucleon 平均核子结合能 $B/A$, which peaks near iron and nickel.
- $B = 24$ MeV with $A = 4$ gives 6 MeV per nucleon; $B = 80$ MeV with $A = 10$ gives 8. Fusion of light nuclei and fission of heavy ones release energy.
- Reaction $Q = (m_{\text{initial}} - m_{\text{final}})c^2$; positive $Q$ releases energy.
He-4 has binding energy 28.3 MeV. Binding energy per nucleon in MeV (two decimal places)?
Binding energy per nucleon is $28.3/4 = 7.08$ MeV.
A reaction has mass decrease 0.0189 u. $Q$ in MeV (one decimal place)?
The released energy is the mass decrease times 931.5 MeV/u: $0.0189 \times 931.5 = 17.6$ MeV.
Particle families
- Leptons 轻子 (electron, muon, neutrinos) have no quarks. The muon is a heavy lepton, not a meson.
- Mesons: quark + antiquark (pion, kaon). Baryons: three quarks (proton $uud$, neutron $udd$).
Lepton, meson or baryon?

The muon is

A heavy electron-like lepton.
Conservation checks
- Charge, energy, momentum, baryon number and each lepton number. $u = +\tfrac23e$, $d = -\tfrac13e$: $uud = +e$, $udd = 0$.
- $n \to p + e^- + \bar\nu_e$ balances charge and lepton number.
The Δ⁺⁺ baryon is $uuu$. Its charge in units of $e$?
Each up quark carries $+2/3$, so $uuu$ has charge $3 \times 2/3 = +2$.
The Hall effect
- Magnetic force pushes carriers sideways until the Hall field balances it. One carrier type: $R_H = \dfrac{1}{nq}$ — negative for electrons, positive for holes.
- Conductivity alone hides the sign. With both carriers, a mobility-weighted model is needed.
Electron density $n$: $R_H = -\dfrac{1}{ne}$. The raw voltage sign means something only when the current, field and lead directions are stated.
Measuring resistivity alone reveals whether electrons or holes carry the current.
Resistivity gives only the magnitude of the conductivity; the sign of the Hall voltage reveals whether electrons or holes carry the current.
Recap
- Stability: binding per nucleon, not total.
- Leptons have no quarks; mesons $q\bar q$; baryons $qqq$.
- Hall coefficient $1/nq$ reveals the carrier sign.
