Moving more heat than the work supplied
- A refrigerator pumping 560 J out of a 280 K interior with only 40 J of work has a coefficient of performance (COP) of 14. That is not an efficiency above 100% — the heat is moved, not created.
- GRE thermodynamics tests first-law signs, process paths on $P$–$V$ diagrams, entropy and the Carnot limits for engines and refrigerators.
First law along a path
- $\Delta U = Q - W$, $W = \int P\,dV$ (by the gas). Ideal gas: $U$ depends only on $T$.
- Constant volume: $W = 0$, $\Delta U = Q$. Isothermal 等温的: $\Delta U = 0$, $Q = W$. Adiabatic 绝热的: $Q = 0$ (not constant $T$). Cycle: $\Delta U = 0$, net $Q$ = net $W$.
Which quantity is zero?
Identify Q = 0, W = 0 or ΔU = 0 for ideal-gas processes.
In an adiabatic process,

Adiabatic means no heat crosses the boundary: $Q = 0$, so $\Delta U = W$ on the gas.
Reading $P$–$V$ diagrams
- Isotherm $PV =$ const; adiabat $PV^\gamma =$ const, steeper. Clockwise cycle: positive net work equal to the enclosed area.
- Rectangle from $1$ to $3\times10^5$ Pa and $0.001$ to $0.004$ m³: $W = 2\times10^5 \times 0.003 = 600$ J. Use Pa and m³, not litres.
A clockwise rectangular cycle spans $2\times10^5$ to $4\times10^5$ Pa and 1 L to 3 L. Net work in J?

$2\times10^5 \times 0.002$.
Entropy
- $dS = \delta Q_{\text{rev}}/T$; $S$ is a state function. Reversible isothermal expansion: $\Delta S_{\text{gas}} = nR\ln(V_2/V_1)$; the reservoir loses the same.
- A reversible process has zero total entropy change; the system's entropy can still change.
One mole of ideal gas doubles its volume reversibly and isothermally. Entropy change in J/K (two decimal places)?
For a reversible isothermal expansion $\Delta S = nR\ln(V_2/V_1) = 8.314 \ln 2 = 5.76$ J/K.
Engines, refrigerators, heat pumps
- Engine $\eta = 1 - T_C/T_H$; refrigerator $\text{COP} = \dfrac{T_C}{T_H - T_C}$; heat pump $\dfrac{T_H}{T_H - T_C}$ (all Carnot limits, kelvin).
Carnot refrigerator, $T_C = 280$ K, $T_H = 300$ K, entropy transfer 2 J/K: $Q_C = 560$ J, $Q_H = 600$ J, $W = 40$ J, COP $= 14 = 280/20$.
Carnot refrigerator COP between 270 K and 300 K?
A Carnot refrigerator has $\text{COP} = T_C/(T_H - T_C) = 270/30 = 9$.
Carnot heat-pump COP between the same temperatures?
A heat pump delivers $Q_H$, so $\text{COP} = T_H/(T_H - T_C) = 300/30 = 10$, one more than the refrigerator.
A refrigerator with a coefficient of performance of 14 violates energy conservation.
It moves 14 J of heat per joule of work; it does not create energy.
Recap
- Match each process to the quantity that vanishes: $Q$, $W$ or $\Delta U$.
- Work = area in SI units; clockwise is positive.
- COP $= T_C/(T_H - T_C)$ can exceed 1.
- isothermal: At constant temperature.
- adiabatic: With no heat crossing the boundary.
