Energy allows it; entropy 熵 forbids it
- An inventor claims an engine converting 70% of heat to work between 600 K and 300 K. Energy is conserved — but the second law caps it at 50%.
- GRE thermal physics tests the first-law sign convention, Carnot limits, entropy, Boltzmann factors and quantum statistics.
First law and signs
- $\Delta U = Q - W$, with $W$ the work done by the system (some texts use $+W$ on the system — say which).
- Isothermal ideal gas: $\Delta U = 0$, so $Q = W = nRT\ln(V_f/V_i)$.
Carnot limits
- Engine: $\eta \le 1 - T_c/T_h$ (kelvin). Refrigerator: $\text{COP} \le \dfrac{T_c}{T_h - T_c}$.
- Reversible heat flow changes entropy by $\Delta S = Q/T$.
600 K and 300 K: $\eta_{\max} = 0.5$. From 1000 J of heat, at most 500 J of work; at least 500 J must be rejected. Then the hot reservoir 热库 has $\Delta S_{\text{hot}} = -\tfrac{1000}{600}$ and $\Delta S_{\text{cold}} = +\tfrac{500}{300}$: total zero, as reversibility requires.
Use kelvin. With Celsius, $1 - T_c/T_h$ gives nonsense such as 100% efficiency between 100 °C and 0 °C.
Maximum efficiency of an engine between 500 K and 300 K?

The Carnot limit is $1 - T_C/T_H = 1 - 300/500 = 0.4$.
Maximum COP of a refrigerator between 250 K (inside) and 300 K (room)?
Độ khó 2/5 · 140 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
A Carnot refrigerator has $\text{COP} = T_C/(T_H - T_C) = 250/(300 - 250) = 5$.
600 J of heat flows reversibly into a reservoir at 300 K. Its entropy change in J/K?
Độ khó 2/5 · 140 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
For heat added reversibly at constant temperature, $\Delta S = Q/T = 600/300 = 2$ J/K.
The Carnot efficiency between 100 °C and 0 °C is $1 - 0/100 = 1$.

Use kelvin; 1 − 273/373 ≈ 0.27.
Boltzmann factors
- $P(E_i) = \dfrac{g_i e^{-E_i/kT}}{Z}$, where the partition function 配分函数 is $Z = \sum g_i e^{-E_i/kT}$.
- Two levels a gap $\Delta E$ apart: $\dfrac{N_2}{N_1} = \dfrac{g_2}{g_1}e^{-\Delta E/kT}$.
Two nondegenerate levels with $\Delta E = kT$. The ratio of upper to lower populations is

Boltzmann populations scale as $e^{-E/kT}$, so the ratio is $e^{-\Delta E/kT} = e^{-1}$.
Which statistics?
- Mean occupation $\bar n = \dfrac{1}{e^{(E-\mu)/kT} \pm 1}$: $+$ for fermions (at most 1), $-$ for bosons (can pile up).
- When $\bar n \ll 1$ both reduce to Maxwell–Boltzmann: a dilute, hot gas.
Which statistics apply?
Match a physical system to its occupation statistics.
Recap
- State the sign convention for $W$.
- $\eta \le 1 - T_c/T_h$ in kelvin; $\Delta S = Q/T$ for reversible flow.
- Boltzmann weights divided by $Z$; FD for fermions, BE for bosons, MB when dilute.
- reservoir: A body large enough that heat flow does not change its temperature.
