| cross product/krɒs ˈprɒdʌkt/ | tích có hướng |
| projection/prəˈdʒekʃn/ | A representation of an object or surface on another surface according to a specified rule. |
| normal/ˈnɔːml/ | A vector perpendicular to a plane or surface. |
Same way, square, or opposite?
- Two direction vectors can point roughly together, meet at right angles, or oppose. The dot product tells which; the cross product 叉积 measures the area they span.
- GRE vector geometry tests dot products, projections 投影, cross products, planes and triple products.
Dot product and projection
- $\mathbf u \cdot \mathbf v = |\mathbf u||\mathbf v|\cos\theta$: positive (acute), zero (right), negative (obtuse).
- Projection of $\mathbf v$ onto $\mathbf u$: $\dfrac{\mathbf v \cdot \mathbf u}{\mathbf u \cdot \mathbf u}\mathbf u$. $\mathbf w = (3,4)$ onto $(1,0)$: $(3,0)$, remainder $(0,4)$ perpendicular.
Acute, right or obtuse?
Read the angle type from the sign of the dot product.
The vector projection of $(2, 3)$ onto $(1, 1)$ is

proj = (u · v / v · v) v = ((2 + 3)/2)(1, 1) = (5/2)(1, 1) = (2.5, 2.5).
$(1, 2, -1)$ and $(3, -1, 1)$ are perpendicular.

True. The dot product is 1 · 3 + 2 · (−1) + (−1) · 1 = 3 − 2 − 1 = 0, and a zero dot product means perpendicular.
Cross product and area
- $\mathbf u \times \mathbf v = (u_2v_3 - u_3v_2,\; u_3v_1 - u_1v_3,\; u_1v_2 - u_2v_1)$, perpendicular to both, length $|\mathbf u||\mathbf v|\sin\theta$ = parallelogram area.
Triangle $(0,0,0)$, $(2,0,0)$, $(0,3,0)$: edges from one vertex $(2,0,0)$, $(0,3,0)$; cross product $(0,0,6)$; triangle area $\tfrac12 \cdot 6 = 3$.
Find the area of the triangle with vertices $(0,0,0)$, $(1,2,0)$ and $(3,1,0)$.

Cross product (0, 0, 1 − 6); |−5|/2.
Planes, distance, volume
- Plane through $\mathbf p$ with normal 法向量 $\mathbf n$: $\mathbf n \cdot (\mathbf x - \mathbf p) = 0$. Distance from $\mathbf q$: $\dfrac{|\mathbf n \cdot (\mathbf q - \mathbf p)|}{|\mathbf n|}$.
- $2x - y + 2z = 6$: $|\mathbf n| = 3$, distance from the origin $6/3 = 2$.
- $|\mathbf u \cdot (\mathbf v \times \mathbf w)|$ is the parallelepiped volume; zero means the three vectors are dependent.
Find the distance from $(1, 1, 1)$ to the plane $x + 2y + 2z = 14$.

|1 + 2 + 2 − 14|/3 = 9/3.

Zero volume.
A counting argument
- Can four nonzero plane vectors have every pairwise dot product negative? No: going round the circle, four gaps each over $90°$ would exceed $360°$.
- $\mathbf e_1, -\mathbf e_1, \mathbf e_2, -\mathbf e_2$: of six pairs, two negative and four zero.
Recap
- Sign of the dot product gives the angle type; project with $\frac{\mathbf v \cdot \mathbf u}{\mathbf u \cdot \mathbf u}\mathbf u$.
- $|\mathbf u \times \mathbf v|$ is the parallelogram; halve it for a triangle, using edges from one vertex.
- Divide by $|\mathbf n|$ for plane distance.
- normal: A vector perpendicular to a plane or surface.
