| amplitude/ˈæmplɪtjuːd/ | The maximum displacement from an equilibrium position. |
| phase/feɪz/ | The angle inside a periodic function that sets where its cycle starts. |
| cusp/kʌsp/ | A sharp point on a continuous graph where the one-sided slopes become unbounded with opposite signs. |
Same wave, different start
- $y = 2\cos 3x$ starts at a peak; $y = -2\cos 3x$ starts at a trough. Same amplitude 振幅, same period — only the phase 相位 differs.
- GRE trigonometry and parametric questions test amplitude, period, phase shift, elimination of the parameter and tangent slopes.
Amplitude, period, phase
- $y = A\cos(\omega x - \varphi)$, $A, \omega > 0$: amplitude $A$, period $2\pi/\omega$, horizontal shift $\varphi/\omega$.
- $-2\cos 3x = 2\cos(3x - \pi)$: phase $\pi$, shift $\pi/3$. Peaks where $3x - \pi = 2\pi k$.
What is the period of $y = 5\sin(4x + 1)$? Give a decimal to three places.

For sin(bx + c) the period is 2π/b. Here b = 4, so the period is 2π/4 = π/2 ≈ 1.571; the amplitude 5 and phase 1 do not change it.
Phase is not shift
- The phase $\varphi$ is inside the argument; the shift is $\varphi/\omega$. They coincide only when $\omega = 1$.
- A single zero crossing does not fix the phase: the slope there tells rising from falling. Calculus uses radians.
Which feature changed?
Distinguish amplitude, period and phase changes from y = cos x.
$y = \cos(2x - \pi/2)$ is $y = \cos 2x$ shifted right by

Write cos(2x − π/2) = cos 2(x − π/4). The shift is φ/ω = (π/2)/2 = π/4 to the right, not π/2.
Parametric curves
- Eliminating $t$ gives the point set but loses direction and range. $x = 2\cos t$, $y = \sin t$: $\frac{x^2}{4} + y^2 = 1$, counter-clockwise once for $t \in [0, 2\pi]$.
- $x = \cos^3 t$, $y = \sin^3 t$: the astroid $|x|^{2/3} + |y|^{2/3} = 1$. Restricting $t$ to $[0, \pi/2]$ gives only the first-quadrant arc.
The curve $x = \cos t$, $y = \sin t$, $0 \le t \le \pi$, is the whole unit circle.

False. x² + y² = 1 holds, but for 0 ≤ t ≤ π we have y = sin t ≥ 0, so the curve is only the upper semicircle. The parameter range matters.
Slopes from the parameter
- $\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{dy/dt}{dx/dt}$ when $dx/dt \neq 0$. Horizontal tangent: $dy/dt = 0$, $dx/dt \neq 0$.
Ellipse at $t = \pi/4$: $\frac{dx}{dt} = -\sqrt2$, $\frac{dy}{dt} = \frac{\sqrt2}{2}$, slope $-\tfrac12$. For $x = t^2$, $y = t^3$ at $t = 0$, both derivatives vanish; the quotient $\tfrac{3t}{2} \to 0$ shows a cusp 尖点 with a horizontal tangent.
$x = t^2 + 1$, $y = t^3 - 3t$. Find $dy/dx$ at $t = 2$.

dy/dx = (dy/dt)/(dx/dt) = (3t² − 3)/(2t). At t = 2: (12 − 3)/4 = 9/4 = 2.25.
For $x = t^2 + 1$, $y = t^3 - 3t$, horizontal tangents occur at

dy/dt = 3t² − 3 = 0 and dx/dt = 2t ≠ 0.
Recap
- Period $2\pi/\omega$; shift $= \varphi/\omega$, not $\varphi$.
- Elimination loses direction and parameter range.
- Slope $= \dot y/\dot x$; when both vanish, take a limit.
- phase: The angle inside a periodic function that sets where its cycle starts.
