A flat point can be anything
- At the origin, $x^2 + y^2$, $-x^2 - y^2$ and $x^2 - y^2$ all have zero gradient: a minimum, a maximum and a saddle 鞍点.
- GRE optimisation tests the second-derivative test, its inconclusive case, Lagrange multipliers 拉格朗日乘数 and boundary checks.
The second-derivative test
- At a critical point 临界点 let $D = f_{xx}f_{yy} - f_{xy}^2$.
- $D > 0$, $f_{xx} > 0$: local min. $D > 0$, $f_{xx} < 0$: local max. $D < 0$: saddle.
- $x^2 + 4xy + y^2$: $D = 4 - 16 < 0$ — a saddle, even though both pure second partials are positive.
For $f = x^2 + xy + y^2$, compute $D = f_{xx}f_{yy} - f_{xy}^2$ at the origin.

$2 \cdot 2 - 1$; with $f_{xx} > 0$, a minimum.
The origin is a critical point of $f = 3x^2 - 6xy + y^2$. It is

$D = 6 \cdot 2 - 36 < 0$.
When $D = 0$
$D = 0$ is inconclusive, not a saddle. $x^4 + y^4$ (strict minimum) and $x^4 - y^4$ (saddle) both have $D = 0$ at the origin. Test along lines or use an inequality.
What is at the origin?
Classify critical points, including the D = 0 case.
If $D = 0$ at a critical point, the second-derivative test is inconclusive.

True. $x^4 + y^4$ (minimum), $-x^4 - y^4$ (maximum) and $x^4 - y^4$ (saddle) all have $D = 0$ at the origin.
Lagrange multipliers
- On $g = c$ with $\nabla g \neq \mathbf 0$: solve $\nabla f = \lambda\nabla g$ together with $g = c$. This gives candidates, not a verdict.
Minimise $x^2 + y^2$ on $x + y = 6$: $2x = \lambda = 2y$, so $x = y = 3$, value 18. On the line, $x^2 + (6-x)^2 = 2(x - 3)^2 + 18$ proves it is the global minimum. There is no maximum: the line is unbounded.
Maximise $xy$ subject to $x + y = 10$.

Substitute y = 10 − x: xy = 10x − x², maximised at x = 5 (Lagrange gives y = λ = x). Then xy = 5 · 5 = 25.
Compact domains: check every piece
- A continuous function on a closed bounded region attains a global max and min. Compare interior critical points, each edge, and the corners.
- $f = x^2 - y^2$ on $[-1,1]^2$: the only interior critical point is a saddle; the max 1 and min $-1$ occur on the boundary.
What is the maximum of $x^2 - y^2$ on the square $[-1, 1] \times [-1, 1]$?

At (±1, 0), on the boundary.
Recap
- Zero gradient is necessary for an interior extremum, not sufficient.
- $D < 0$ saddle; $D > 0$ use the sign of $f_{xx}$; $D = 0$ test directly.
- Multipliers give candidates; check regularity, boundaries and boundedness.
- saddle: A critical point where the function rises in some directions and falls in others.
- Lagrange multipliers: A method for constrained extrema that solves grad f = λ grad g with the constraint.
- critical point: A point where the gradient is zero or undefined.
