Key listening: gist and matching
Đã giới thiệu| English | Ý nghĩa |
|---|---|
| gist/dʒɪst/ | ý chính |
| purpose/ˈpɜːpəs/ | The aim or intended result of an action or communication. |
What is it mainly about?
- Part 4 asks: "Why did the boy call his friend?" The boy talks about the weather, the bus and, finally, asks to borrow a book.
- The question is about the main reason, not every detail: he called to borrow a book. Gist 主旨 questions need the overall point.
Parts 4 and 5
- Part 4: five short monologues or dialogues, each with one question about the main idea, purpose 写作目的 or feeling.
- Part 5: a conversation where you match five people (or days, items) to options from a longer list — some options are not used.
Listen for the main point
- Ask: why is the person speaking? To invite, complain, apologise, ask, suggest?
- Feelings are often shown by words like "worried", "excited", "disappointed", or by phrases: "I can't wait!" → excited.
"I practised every day, but I didn't get into the team. Maybe next year." Feeling: disappointed. Not angry — there is no complaint about anyone.
Main point or detail?
Separate the main purpose of a message from supporting details.
A girl says: “Hi Jo, sorry it's late. The traffic was terrible. Anyway, can I borrow your history notes for tomorrow?” Why is she calling?

Can't wait = very much looking forward to it.
Matching across a conversation
- Read the list of options before you listen; some will be mentioned but rejected: "Tom wanted the red one, but it was too expensive, so he got the blue one" → blue.
- Each option is used at most once; cross out options you have used.
“Tom wanted the red bike, but it was too expensive, so he got the blue one.” Which bike did Tom get?
Độ khó 1/5 · 100 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
The red one was rejected.
In Part 5, every option in the list is used.
Độ khó 1/5 · 100 xu + một phần thưởng nhỏ cho lần hoàn thành đầu tiên trong ngày
There are more options than people; some are not used.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a detail that was mentioned instead of the main point.
- Matching an option that was mentioned but then rejected.
Recap
- Part 4: listen for the reason, purpose or feeling behind what is said.
- Part 5: read the options first; listen past rejected choices; use each option once.
Write from the blue bag
- The speaker looked at the red bag, but she bought the blue one.
- The answer is the final choice. A familiar colour is not enough.
A speaker says she looked at the red bag, but she bought the blue one. What did she buy, and why is red a distractor?
Gist follows the final choice. A topic word can be a distractor.
