Before words come sounds. Every Chinese syllable is an initial plus a final, said in one beat. Learn the families English does not have: the puff pairs b, p, d, t, g, k, where the tissue tells you which is which; and the three hisses s, sh and x, each a different tongue. Pinyin is a map, not English: follow its sounds, not your guesses.
Every syllable has two parts. The initial launches the syllable, and the final carries it. 妈: m launches, a carries. 中: zh launches, o-n-g carries. And some syllables skip the initial entirely, like 安, which is all final. Say each syllable in one beat, with the final loud and long and the initial quick.
The puff pairs are the first trap, and the tissue is the cheapest teacher. Hold a tissue in front of your mouth. 八, eight: no puff, the tissue stays still. 怕, afraid: puff, the tissue flaps. 大 and 他, 哥 and 科, the same story. English p, t and k always puff at the start of a word, but Chinese b, d and g do not, so let the tissue decide, not your habit.
Three hisses hide in plain sight. 四, four: a thin English s with the tongue flat. 是, to be: a fat s with the tongue curled back. 西, west: a smiling s with the tongue high and forward, a sound English does not have, the hiss inside a very slow see. Say 四,是,西 slowly, then quickly. Three hisses, three meanings, and none of them is zee.
Watch out for two things. Do not read pinyin letters as English: 西 is not zee, and 七 is not kee, because the letters are a map of Chinese sounds, not English spelling. And keep the tissue in your pencil case: it is your cheapest teacher, and it works for every new pair you meet.
Review. What two parts make every Chinese syllable? Which letters flap the tissue: the p, t, k side, or the b, d, g side? Which hiss is the smiling one: s, sh, or x? And name the initial and the final of 妈. If the sounds sort themselves, the map is readable, and the next topic, the four tones, will land on it.
