Formal speech: argue, summarise, present
-
This HSK 6 teaching lesson practises argument, synthesis and formal presentation. Suggested short turns are local rehearsal choices, not an official exam blueprint or evidence of proficiency.
-
Same method: hear → say → record → compare. Nothing is scored; the recording stays on this page.
-
Before you start: Recall faithful source summary and evidence-bounded proposals. Preserve who, how many, what happened and what remains uncertain before making an inference.
A source reports that participants said they concentrated better; it did not measure attainment. Which summary stays within the evidence?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Self-reported concentration is the reported outcome. It is not a measured attainment result, a causal proof or evidence about all learners.
Concede, then rebut
- The formal concession: indeed诚然 / admittedly (it's true…固然 …, but但 … — indeed诚然,network (computing…网络to learn学习degree / adjective linker很convenient方便,but但it它unable to无法complete完全to replace取代face to face面对面(modifier / structural particle)的classroom课堂。
- A relevant concession can show that you recognise a competing point. It does not by itself prove the rebuttal; supply reasons or evidence for the limit you draw.
- Practice box 1: record the concession-rebuttal pair.
Hear the model, then record the concession-rebuttal pair.
Grant, then rebut: 诚然…但 is the formal version of "true, but…".
Summarising aloud
- A summary must follow an actual source: preserve its main point, scope and logical relationships. Repeating a model conclusion is rehearsal, not evidence that you can summarise an unfamiliar passage.
- Choose a fitting link: to summarize综上所述 and in short总而言之 introduce a synthesis or conclusion; from this, it can be seen…由此可见 introduces an inference from what precedes. The marker cannot supply missing support.
- to summarize综上所述,to move运动not just不仅有益健康,still / also还can / be able to能to raise提高工作效率。 — a model conclusion for pronunciation rehearsal. Without the supporting passage, you cannot check whether its two claims faithfully summarise a source.
- Practice box 2: record the summary line.
Work through a decision: Separate the source’s report from your synthesis. Keep a sample limit and the outcome type, then shorten details that do not change the relationship. If you recommend expanding a trial, label that move as a proposal and explain what additional evidence would justify it.
Compare a near miss: A formal summary marker cannot make an unsupported causal conclusion faithful. Likewise, acknowledging one benefit does not require rejecting every concern. State exactly what your concession grants and what your evidence still leaves open.
Rehearse the model conclusion aloud. This repetition alone does not test source summarisation.
This exercise rehearses a conclusion line. Source-faithful summarisation needs an actual source to check its main point, scope and logic; a polished marker cannot supply that evidence.
A source says a voluntary trial was small and used self-reports. Which conclusion preserves both limits?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The third keeps the small voluntary group and self-report basis, and treats further evaluation as needed. The other conclusions invent universal, causal or guaranteed results.
Precision markers
- 不可否认((modifier / structural particle)的to be / is是) — it cannot be denied: 不可否认(modifier / structural particle)的to be / is是,habit习惯(modifier / structural particle)的to change改变to need需要(concept of) time时间and / with和to be patient耐心。
- to be worth值得to indicate指出(modifier / structural particle)的to be / is是 — worth pointing out: to be worth值得to indicate指出(modifier / structural particle)的to be / is是,这项research研究only只to cover覆盖(completed / change)了城市居民。
- 不可否认 introduces a strong acknowledgement; to be worth值得to indicate指出(modifier / structural particle)的to be / is是 highlights a point worth noting. In the research example, only只 supplies the scope limit. The marker itself does not necessarily limit a claim.
- Practice boxes 3 and 4: record both.
Agree firmly. Record the sentence.
不可否认 says "this much is solid" — then you may build or limit from there.
Limit it precisely. Record the sentence.
The example limits the research coverage with 只覆盖了城市居民. 值得指出的是 can introduce other kinds of noteworthy point; it is not itself a scope-limiting expression.
The register-mixing trap
- Choose precise wording for the audience. this这个thing东西slightly有点儿question问题 vaguely says something has a problem; 这一question问题to be worth值得to pay attention to关注 says a particular issue deserves attention. They are different claims, not interchangeable “wrong” and “right” versions.
- Words such as erhua variant of 一点一点儿 or thing东西 are not forbidden in formal speech. Prefer a specific referent and a fitting tone; adding comparatively较为 or to give予以 does not automatically improve a sentence.
- Keep a suitable overall register, while allowing an example, quotation or audience-friendly explanation when it serves the argument.
The formal frame
- Open with the question: everybody各位good好,today今天I / me我want / think / miss想to discuss讨论(modifier / structural particle)的question问题to be / is是:science and technology科技to let / make让to live生活more更simple简单,or / still还是more更complicated复杂?
- Close with the verdict: in short总而言之,关键在于we / us我们how如何to use使用science and technology科技,and / but而no不是science and technology科技itself本身。
- Between them: thesis → concession → rebuttal → example. Practice boxes 5 and 6 are the frame.
Open the formal talk. Record the line.
Name the question, then answer it — the audience knows exactly where you are going.
Your turn: a forty-five-second argument
- Take a real issue (study, work, technology, city life): thesis → concession → rebuttal → one precision marker → closing verdict.
- Put your own argument inside the frame when you record. Record twice: notes, then free.
- Listen back for clear references, supported claims and a register suited to your audience. Revise one concrete weakness rather than removing every conversational word.
Close YOUR argument — thesis, concession, rebuttal, then this verdict. Record twice.
The conclusion must follow your actual argument. Keep the intended contrast and support it; neither a formal marker nor a short time target establishes advanced proficiency.

Preserve the main reported result and the limits; do not recommend an expansion unless you clearly separate your own proposal from the summary. Speak in Mandarin. Use brief notes rather than reading a prepared answer.

Keep the voice working
- Tomorrow, before you reopen this page: argue one issue for forty-five seconds — aloud, timed, formal.
- For separate task options, visit Chinese practice. Repeating an answer is rehearsal, not evidence of independent comprehension.
- This is the last lesson in this local speaking strand. Revisit source-based summary practice for independent interpretation and transfer; confirm your booked exam’s version and requirements separately.
Later recall: Tomorrow, summarise a different short source aloud before viewing any model, retaining outcome type and scope. A few days later, turn a fresh source into a recommendation, then change one piece of evidence. Compare the changed inference rather than only timing the turn.
Different source and purpose: 一家公司试行每周一天远程办公。参与者认为通勤压力减轻,但跨部门沟通有时更慢。试行仅覆盖一个部门,尚无客户满意度数据。Address management in Mandarin with a balanced recommendation, acknowledging a benefit and a limitation. Then suppose a second department joins, while customer data remain unavailable: revise only the evidential scope that actually changes. Speak in Mandarin.
