Say it aloud: tones, greetings and your first introduction

Say it, don't just read it
-
Chinese lives in the voice: tones, rhythm and clear syllables. Reading quietly is not speaking practice.
-
The method for every box on this page: hear → say → record → compare.
-
Your recording stays on this page. Nobody else can hear it. Nothing is scored — you are the judge, with a checklist.
-
Before you start: Recall the first conversation and connected-speech changes. Begin with a new greeting/name exchange; written choices below do not measure pronunciation.
Someone asks 你叫什么名字? Which reply gives your own name?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
我叫李明 names the speaker. 你叫李明 describes the listener and 我是学生 gives an identity. Revisit the name question if the roles get mixed.
Tones carry meaning
- mā ma妈 (mother), má generic name for hemp, flax…麻 (hemp), mǎ horse马 (horse), ma (yes/no ?)吗 (question particle) — same letters, four meanings.
- Two third tones together: hello你好 sounds like ní hǎo — the first syllable rises. You met this in lesson 1.
- Practice box 1: record the greeting pair. Compare the rising first syllable of hello你好 and the light final (yes/no ?)吗 in hello你好(yes/no ?)吗. A checklist guides self-review; it does not measure pronunciation.
Hear the model, then record yourself saying it.
Two third tones together: 你好 sounds like ní hǎo. Record until it does.
Greetings that answer back
- hello你好。→ hello你好。 Then the fuller exchange: hello你好(yes/no ?)吗?— I / me我degree / adjective linker很good好。you你(and …? / softener)呢?
- you你(and …? / softener)呢 returns the question — and you? Keep (and …? / softener)呢 short and unstressed; do not assign it one fixed pitch.
- Practice box 2: record both sides of the exchange, one voice at a time.
Work through a decision: For a new meeting, decide which move the listener needs: a greeting, a name, or an identity. you你variant of 叫叫what什么name (of a person or thing)名字? needs I / me我variant of 叫叫 plus a name; you你to be / is是student学生(yes/no ?)吗? checks an identity and needs a fitting confirmation or correction. Say the new information rather than repeating whichever model line you remember.
Compare a near miss: I / me我variant of 叫叫Wang Li (1900-1986), one of…王力 can be clear Mandarin but still fail to answer you你to be / is是student学生(yes/no ?)吗? Correct sound and a fitting response are separate things to review. Likewise, a fluent copied introduction does not show that you can adapt it when the role changes.
Record the whole exchange — both sides.
你呢 returns the question; keep it light or it sounds like an answer.
A fictional student is asked 你是老师吗? Which reply both corrects the guess and states the role?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
不是 rejects the guessed identity and 我是学生 supplies the role. The second reply agrees with the wrong role; the third uses a naming frame for an identity.
Your name
- I / me我variant of 叫叫 + name: I / me我variant of 叫叫李明。
- To ask: you你variant of 叫叫what什么name (of a person or thing)名字? — What is your name?
- Practice box 3: record the question and the answer.
Ask and answer. Record both sentences.
我叫 introduces the speaker’s name in this frame. Ask for a name with 你叫什么名字? rather than translating each English word separately.
Where you are from
- I / me我to be / is是 + place + person人: I / me我to be / is是China中国person人。I / me我to be / is是Beijing, capital of the…北京person人。
- For this complete identity-statement pattern, keep to be / is是: I / me我to be / is是China中国person人。A fragment in conversation is a different use; practise the full sentence here.
- Practice box 4: record where the speaker is from.
Say where the speaker is from. Record both sentences.
我是中国人 is the complete identity-statement pattern here. Spoken fragments depend on context; practise the full frame rather than treating every omission as impossible.
Numbers aloud
- Phone-number digits are spoken one by one: one / a一、three三、five五、seven七、eight八 (yī, sān, wǔ, qī, bā). Ages use the normal number: fifteen years old is 十五岁 (shí wǔ suì), not one / a一五岁.
- two二 èr has a falling fourth tone; eight八 bā has a high, level first tone. Keep the contrast clear without forcing your voice.
- Practice box 5: record the five digits, then say a different fictional digit sequence the same way.
Record the five digits clearly, then try a different fictional digit sequence.
Use digit-by-digit pronunciation for this fictional sequence. 二 èr is falling fourth tone; 八 bā is level first tone. Compare one contrast at a time without forcing your voice.
The flat-tone trap
- Dropping tone contrasts can change a word or make it harder to identify. Context may help, but it does not guarantee understanding.
- In nǐ hǎo, the first syllable normally rises in connected speech, while the second is third tone. A third tone can remain low rather than making a full dip and rise. Compare whole phrases, not one pitch shape applied everywhere.
- Review the four tones and connected-speech changes if those contrasts are unclear.
Your turn: a full self-introduction
- Put it together: hello你好!I / me我variant of 叫叫 … I / me我to be / is是 … person人。to thank谢谢!
- Practice box 6 gives Li Ming's introduction — adapt it with your own or fictional details when you record. A place-based identity should fit what you intend to say; it is not required in every introduction.
- Record twice: once slow and clear, once at natural speed. Compare both with the model.
Adapt the introduction with your own or fictional details. Record it twice.
This is your introduction now. Record it again tomorrow and compare the two days.
New first-meeting card: you are a fictional student called 林安. Greet a new classmate, give your name, ask their name and answer their mistaken question 你是老师吗? You may voice both people; make your own replies rather than reading the earlier introduction. Speak in Mandarin. Use brief notes rather than reading a prepared answer.
Written comparison supports your own replay and revision. No automatic correctness, pronunciation score or exam-level judgement is provided.
Keep the voice working
- Tomorrow, before you reopen this page: greet, thank, and introduce yourself aloud — no looking.
- For familiar phrases, try saying them before playback, then compare. For a new pronunciation, listen first. A button such as offers a model, not proof that your production is correct.
- Next speaking lesson: routines, times and shopping. For separate local practice options, visit Chinese practice. These are teaching activities, not a verified exam-format blueprint.
Later recall: Tomorrow, answer a different fictional name/role card before reopening the models. A few days later, reverse who asks and answers. Revisit the question/answer step after a meaning mismatch, and the tone-change guide after a sound difficulty.
Changed meeting: play a fictional teacher called 李明 meeting a new student. Greet them, ask their name and answer their question 你是学生吗? Then change only your role to student and record a revised identity answer. Keep your fictional name fixed. Speak in Mandarin. Use brief notes rather than reading a prepared answer.
