Two balls leave a table at the same moment.
One is simply dropped. The other is fired sideways, hard.
Which one hits the floor first?
<slow>They land together.</slow> Every time.
The sideways motion changes nothing about the falling — and that one fact is the key to this entire unit.
This is Unit One: kinematics.
How things move, described precisely — without yet asking what makes them move.
Signs, graphs, equations, and the two-motion trick you just saw.
Let's begin.
Everything in this unit is one of two kinds of quantity.
A scalar has magnitude — size — only: distance, speed, time, mass.
A vector has magnitude and direction: displacement, velocity, acceleration, force.
The difference is not fussy — it changes the answer.
Walk three metres east, then one metre back west.
The distance you covered is four metres. Your displacement is only two metres east.
In one dimension, direction is just a plus or a minus sign along an axis you choose.
Choose that positive direction first, before anything else.
Three linked vectors describe motion along a line.
Displacement is the change in position — where you ended up, measured from where you started.
Velocity is how fast the position changes: displacement divided by the time taken.
Its size alone is the speed.
Acceleration is how fast the velocity changes: change in velocity divided by time.
And keep average apart from instantaneous.
Average velocity uses the whole trip. Instantaneous velocity is the value at a single moment.
They agree only when the velocity never changes.
Now the mistake that costs the most marks.
When velocity and acceleration have the same sign, the object speeds up.
When they have opposite signs, it slows down — that is deceleration.
That is the whole rule.
Here is the trap: a negative acceleration does not mean slowing down.
A ball falling faster and faster has a negative velocity and a negative acceleration — same sign, so it is speeding up.
And a velocity of minus five metres per second is not slow. It is five metres per second, going the other way.
The same motion can appear four ways — a description in words, a graph, a table or an equation — and you should be able to move between them.
When the acceleration is constant — and only then — you get three equations that solve almost everything. Learn them, and learn their limit. To pick one, list the three quantities you already know, plus the one you want.
The right equation is the one containing exactly those four, so only one unknown is left.
A car starts from rest and accelerates at two metres per second squared for six seconds.
Final velocity: zero plus two times six, so twelve metres per second.
Distance: a half times two times six squared, which is thirty-six metres.
Graphs carry the same information, and the exam loves them.
On a position-time graph, the slope is the velocity.
Steeper means faster; flat means at rest; a curve means the velocity is changing.
On a velocity-time graph, the slope is the acceleration — and the area under the line is the displacement.
That second one is worth repeating. Slope gives you the rate; area gives you the total.
And area below the time axis counts as negative, because the object moved the other way.
Try one.
A cyclist speeds up evenly from rest to eight metres per second in four seconds, then holds that speed for six more.
How far did she travel?
Pause here and work it out.
Split the area into shapes you know: a triangle, then a rectangle.
The triangle is a half times four times eight, which is sixteen.
The rectangle is six times eight, which is forty-eight.
So sixteen plus forty-eight gives sixty-four metres.
Drop the air resistance and you have free fall: every object near Earth falls with the same constant acceleration.
Near Earth's surface, AP asks you to use ten metres per second squared, pointing down.
Throw a ball straight up at fifteen metres per second.
At the very top its velocity is zero — but the acceleration is still ten downward, the whole time. It never pauses.
Height reached: fifteen squared over two times ten, which is eleven point two five metres.
Time up: one point five seconds.
And the motion is symmetric, so the fall takes the same one point five seconds — three seconds in the air.
Every velocity is measured against something — a reference frame.
Walk forward on a moving train and you have one velocity relative to the train, and a different one relative to the ground. Neither is wrong.
Two metres per second on a thirty-metre-per-second train is thirty-two relative to the ground — both readings are correct.
To get the velocity of A relative to B, subtract B's velocity from A's.
A boat points straight across a river at three metres per second, and the current carries it along at four.
Those are at right angles, so add them like a triangle: the square root of three squared plus four squared is five metres per second, pointing fifty-three degrees downstream from straight across.
One more word: an inertial frame is one that is not accelerating.
Acceleration comes out the same in every inertial frame — but in a non-inertial one, an accelerating car or a spinning roundabout, it does not.
In two dimensions there is one move, and you make it every single time. Break every vector into two perpendicular pieces — its components.
The horizontal part is the size times the cosine of the angle. The vertical part is the size times the sine.
Then handle each axis completely separately, as its own one-dimensional problem, and recombine at the end.
Two dimensions never require new physics. They require the same physics, done twice.
Now back to the two balls.
For anything moving under gravity alone, the two motions are completely independent.
Horizontally there is no force, so the horizontal velocity never changes at all.
Vertically gravity pulls down with that constant ten.
They share exactly one thing: the clock.
The same time runs in both.
That is why the trajectory — the path — is a parabola, and why the dropped ball and the fired ball land together — their vertical stories are identical.
Last one, and it is the classic.
A ball is kicked at twenty metres per second, thirty degrees above the horizontal.
Find the time of flight, the greatest height, and the range.
Pause here and try it. Components first: horizontal is twenty times cosine thirty, about seventeen point three. Vertical is twenty times sine thirty, exactly ten.
The vertical part sets the time: it takes one second to reach the top, so two seconds in the air.
Greatest height is ten squared over twenty, five metres.
And the range is seventeen point three times two — about thirty-five metres.
Three habits that save marks.
First, fix a positive direction before you write anything, and let every sign follow from it.
Second, the kinematic equations work only while the acceleration is constant — check that before you use one.
Third, at the top of a projectile's flight the vertical velocity is zero, but the object is not at rest: the horizontal velocity is exactly what it always was.
Get those three, and Unit One is yours.
Five leftover facts.
First, kinematics describes how objects move, without asking why — and the same motion can be a description, a graph, a table, or an equation.
Second, instantaneous velocity is the slope of the position-time graph at one point.
Third, there is a fourth kinematic equation: displacement equals half of initial plus final velocity, times time — still only while acceleration is constant.
Fourth, at the top of a projectile the speed equals the unchanged horizontal velocity, not zero.
Fifth, distinguish distance from displacement, and speed from velocity; a negative velocity means the other way, not slow.
