Family and routines. Assign the actor, time and activity clearly, with jingchang for often and youshihou for sometimes. Keep duration apart from dates, because liang nian and a year number answer different questions. And mark what is happening right now with zhengzai, and what is about to happen with kuaiyao dot dot dot le.
The activity record reads by row. Baba xingqiliu dasao fangjian, jiejie wanshang zuo zuoye, Dad cleans on Saturday, big sister does homework in the evening. Ask who cleans the room, and the answer is Baba, the person and the time from the same row, not the nearest familiar word. The everyday split runs the same way: Mama wanshang zuo fan, wo xi wan, Mum cooks in the evening, I wash the dishes. Assign the actor, time and activity clearly, and the record stays honest.
Duration and dates look alike and answer different questions. Wo xue Zhongwen xue le liang nian, I have studied Chinese for two years, where the verb repeats, xue Zhongwen xue le, so the duration liang nian has a verb to hang on. A year number like ersan-ling-ersi nian answers which year, not how long. Say how long you have studied English, with the repeated verb, and feel the difference.
Two markers for two futures, one immediate. Zhengzai identifies ongoing activity: wo zhengzai xie zuoye, I'm doing homework right now. Kuaiyao dot dot dot le describes an approaching event: kuaiyao shangke le, class is about to start, where le leans on the near future rather than the past. One says it is happening; the other says it is nearly happening. Describe your family's Saturday with who does what, and use both markers once.
The watch-out repeats the topic's cleanest split: liang nian, two years, and a year number answer different questions, how long versus which year. Duration rides on the repeated verb, xue Zhongwen xue le liang nian, while a date stands alone in its slot. A record that swaps them is wrong in both directions.
Pause and check both. First, the same row as the question's verb, baba with xingqiliu, not the nearest familiar word. Second, kuaiyao dot dot dot le marks the approaching event, while zhengzai marks the ongoing one. The remaining review items: the duration sentence with the repeated verb, wo xue Zhongwen xue le liang nian, and jingchang being the more frequent of the routine words.
