External flow: the boundary layer decides the drag

Introduced

Vocabulary
English Meaning
boundary layerThe thin layer next to a surface where viscosity slows the flow from the free-stream speed to zero at the wall.
skin frictionDrag caused by shear stress acting over the wetted surface of a body.
pressure dragDrag caused by low pressure in the wake behind a body, mainly after the flow separates.
flow separationThe point where a boundary layer leaves the surface, leaving a low-pressure wake behind the body.
Strouhal numberThe vortex-shedding frequency times a body's width divided by the flow speed, about 0.2 for a cylinder.
