The second half of the listening paper. Part three: a talk with six note gaps to fill — a guided tour, a course description. Part four: a longer interview with a guest, six questions on detail and attitude. The memory hook: part three is a form — fill it; part four is a podcast — follow the guest's story.
Part three's gaps are signposted by the notes themselves: day, price, name, website — the notes tell you what is coming, so preview and predict. Names and websites are spelled aloud; write the letters as they come. Numbers self-correct: it costs fifteen — sorry, fifty; the sorry is the signal. And plural endings are audible: three weeks, and the s is part of the answer.
Pause and choose. Fifty. The sorry is the signal, and numbers self-correct; wait for it. Fifteen is the bait, and the combined monster fifteen-fifty is not a price, it is a panic.
Part four is the interview. The attitude questions ask how the guest felt, and the word after but is the attitude: it was exhausting, but amazing — amazing is the answer, exhausting is the bait. Details paraphrase: we slept in tents for two weeks becomes they camped. And guests wander: the interviewer asks, the guest tells a story, and the answer comes when the guest finally answers. Patience is a listening skill.
Pause and choose. Amazed. The word after but is the attitude; the word before it is the bait. Exhausted is the bait, bored and angry are furniture, and the guest loved the tents, mostly.
The slow-writer's trap: the note gaps punish slow writers, so write the short form while listening — wk for week — and complete the word at the pause; the recording doesn't wait for your handwriting. The guest's attitude is not yours, so answer with the word after the guest's but. Websites are dictated: travel-now, all one word, dot com. And miss one, move on: a gap you chase is two answers you miss.
Try it. This is a teacher-read rehearsal: no recording here, so the teacher reads the voice aloud twice, exactly like the exam; the printed words are the script, not the task. The notes: course, photography; day; price; website. The voice: it runs on Thursdays; the price? fifty pounds — no, sorry, fifteen; and it's all on shootsmart, one word, dot com. The answers: Thursdays, fifteen, shootsmart dot com. The sorry corrected the price, and the website was dictated. The correction and the dictation are the two guaranteed moments; be ready for both.
Pause for four checks. Sorry is the correction signal: fifty, not fifteen. Names and websites: write the letters as they come. The word after but is the attitude. And miss one, move on: the interview continues. Next topic: the B1 speaking, the photo, the decision and the discussion.
