Ravines and scaling
- On the least-squares line, two steps from $(0,0)$ with $\eta = 0.02$ reach $(0.84, 0.25)$; a thousand close in on the closed form $(0.9, 1.3)$.
- With $L = (x_1-1)^2 + 100(x_2-1)^2$ the surface is a ravine: one rate cannot serve both curvatures — $\eta = 0.009$ crawls; standardising features restores progress. Read the loss change, not the loss, for convergence.
