Shared vocabulary cannot answer a request
- Original written exchange: “Could you show me where the library desk is?” Reply A says, “It is beside the entrance; I can walk there with you.” Reply B says, “Libraries contain many books.” A answers the request; B only shares a topic.
- Now ask, “Is the library desk beside the entrance?” “Yes, the library desk is just inside” fits even though it repeats words. Check the whole reply’s function and meaning. A keyword has no licence to answer on its own.
Identify what the turn is doing
- “Would you like a hand?” offers help; “Thanks for showing me” expresses thanks; “Could you show me…?” requests help. An offer invites acceptance or refusal, while a request invites the requested information or action.
- “I cannot find the new room” can invite practical help in context, even without a question mark. It does not always demand an apology. Read this as a function exercise; actual audio also provides delivery and intonation.
You hear: 'I could give you a lift if you like.' What is the speaker doing?

An offer is accepted or declined. Naming the function first tells you the shape of the right reply before you compare the options.
Separate proposals from accepted decisions
- Written conversation: “Can we meet Monday?” “I have class then. Tuesday at ten?” “Tuesday works; I will bring the draft.” Tuesday at ten is accepted; Monday was proposed and rejected. Keep speaker and status attached to each detail.
- In a different exchange, “Tuesday is unavailable; let us keep Monday” supports Monday. The most recent day word is not automatically the answer. Track what was accepted rather than applying a last-word shortcut.
An option repeats “the seminar room” from the prompt. What should you do?

A repeated phrase can belong in a correct reply. Check the turn’s function and meaning instead of accepting or rejecting a word match.
“Can we meet Monday?” “I have class then. Tuesday at ten?” “Tuesday works; I will bring the draft.” Which appointment is accepted?

Monday is rejected; the final turn accepts Tuesday at ten.
In a new exchange: “Tuesday is unavailable; let us keep Monday.” Which day is supported?

Status and meaning matter; the Tuesday mention explicitly rules it out.
Infer only what the exchange supports
- “I have class then” explains why the Monday proposal fails. It does not establish that the speaker dislikes the other person or that all Mondays are unavailable. Use local context for a supported inference.
- Conversations can ask about more than a problem and solution: main ideas, details and implied meaning also matter. A question about who brings the draft is answered by the final speaker’s promise, not by remembering only the day.
Which approach preserves useful evidence in the appointment conversation?

Conversations may ask for main ideas, details or implied meaning; the accepted decision is one important relation, not a rule about most questions.
“I have class then” establishes that the speaker dislikes the other person.

It explains a timetable conflict, not an attitude towards the person.
First attempt and replay have different jobs
- During an independent audio attempt, follow the sample’s playback conditions and keep text hidden. After answering, replay can help locate a missed correction or phrase; it is useful review rather than evidence of the original first attempt.
- Compare the spoken cue with the transcript and your answer before naming the error. A wrong day could reflect sound confusion, lost attention or an ignored correction. Test the repair on fresh audio rather than memorising the answer letter.
During an independent attempt following one-play instructions, you may replay before answering.

Follow the playback instructions during the first attempt. Replay afterwards can help diagnose a missed cue.
Transfer the decision, then test the sound
- Change the written request to an offer, or change which appointment is accepted, and check whether your answer changes for a reason. These checks teach interpretation; a listening claim also needs actual recordings and independent attempts.
- Now do it on real recordings: start with Choose a response drills, then sit one full conversation, one announcement and one academic talk. Each recording plays once, like the test; the transcript and the explanation unlock only after you submit.
- Review by failure mode, not by letter. For every miss, name it: you missed the information, or you heard it and misjudged its function. Then take a different drill on the same family — not the same one again, or you are testing your memory of the answer key.
- Recap: intention → fitting response; proposal → acceptance; inference → evidence. Task descriptions checked on 2 October 2026: ETS Listening overview. Examples are original text exercises, without official score predictions.
Match the three distinctions from the worked case.

Now try “Is the library desk beside the entrance?” A natural reply can repeat library desk: “Yes, the library desk is just inside.” The repeated words are useful because the meaning fits.
What makes “It is beside the entrance; I can walk there with you” fit the first request?

Judge what the turn is doing and whether the reply responds to it; do not reject shared words mechanically.
