Hold the face, or cut to it
- A woman comes in at night and stops above a sealed letter. A floorboard creaks before we see her face.
- The useful question is what that order lets a viewer know, and what it still withholds.
Name the choice, not the mood
- Mise-en-scène 场面调度 is what has been arranged inside the frame: her coat still on, one lamp, the letter unopened.
- Diegetic sound 叙事内声音 is produced in the story world, such as the kettle and then the creak. Non-diegetic sound 叙事外声音 is added commentary, such as a low tone no object in the room produces.
Match each term to what it names in this sequence.

Use the term for the choice it names here. A tone heard during the kitchen shot is not diegetic unless the room produces it.
Walk the four beats
- Beat 1 is a wide view: she stands at the edge, coat on, not looking at the letter. Beat 2 is a high-angle close-up: her hand stops, and the seal stays unbroken.
- Beat 3 holds on that hand while a creak comes from off screen. Beat 4 cuts to her face only after the creak, and the low tone enters with the face.
Put this original sequence in the order it is shown.

The face comes after the creak, not before it. The seal is still unbroken in the high-angle shot, so the sequence has not shown her opening the letter.
Keep the readings apart
- Editing claim: the delay controls when her expression can explain the creak. It does not prove she is afraid.
- Framing claim: the high angle can make the letter dominate her body in the wide shot. Sound claim: the kettle stopping makes the creak easier to notice; the tone comments, and it is not a radio unless the room shows one.
The creak is heard while the shot stays on the hand. The face comes only after that. What does this order most directly control?

The hold lets the creak arrive before any facial reading. The unbroken seal shows the letter is still unopened; it does not show a later decision. A high angle can make the letter dominate her, which is a framing claim, not a claim about intimacy.
The low tone begins with the face. Nothing in the kitchen is shown producing it. Which reading fits this sequence?

Diegetic means the story world produces the sound. The kettle stops, then the creak reads as an event in that quieter room. The tone has no source in the room, so it comments. Hearing a sound during a shot does not place it in the room, and the creak still withholds identity and place.
The high angle on the hand proves that she has decided not to open the letter.

The hand stops above an unbroken seal. That shows hesitation in this moment. The angle can make the letter look larger than her body in the wide shot. Neither fact shows the later decision, because the sequence never shows her opening or refusing the letter.
This rehearsal is not the assessed extract
- The 2017 subject brief, for first assessment in 2019, sets textual analysis at a prescribed film, an extract of at most five minutes, at most 1,750 words, and a source list.
- That brief is not the full guide. Screening rights, the school's chosen film and the detailed criteria stay with the teacher.
Which limit belongs to the textual analysis this rehearsal prepares for?

Write one reading, then weaken it
- Choose framing, editing or sound. Quote the beat that supports it, and name a fact in the sequence that the reading does not prove.
- A stronger paragraph says what another edit or a visible sound source would change. "It creates suspense" does not say which choice does the work.
Which two readings does this sequence support?

The first reading is about edit order. The second is about the high angle and the unbroken seal. The sequence does not measure every viewer's feeling, so the third claim is too strong.
High angle on the unbroken seal: the letter dominates the hand. That is a framing claim. It does not show whether she later opens the letter, because the sequence never shows that action.
The creak can suggest another presence. It does not name who is there or where they stand. The added tone is not in the kitchen just because we hear it during a kitchen shot.
Separate framing, editing and sound. Tie each claim to one beat, and say what that beat still withholds. This original sequence is practice, not the prescribed film.
