Stories and reasons, not just sentences
-
This HSK 3 teaching lesson practises connected turns: tell what happened, compare things and give reasons. Its activities do not certify exam coverage or proficiency.
-
Same method: hear → say → record → compare. Nothing is scored; the recording stays on this page.
-
Before you start: Recall event meaning and completion and routine speaking. Distinguish an event that happened from a plan, denial or explanation.
A note says 昨天我没去公园。What should your retelling preserve?

没去 denies the going event. Retelling it as a completed visit reverses the source. Do not add a temperature comparison that the note never provides.
Telling yesterday's story
- Verb-suffix (completed / change)了 presents the event as a whole in this example: yesterday昨天I / me我to see看(completed / change)了一个movie电影。
- Add a reaction line: degree / adjective linker很good-looking好看。 — a story is event + comment, not just a list.
- Practice box 1: record the two-line story.
Hear the model, then record the two-line story.
The model presents a viewing event and a reaction. 了 is not a general past-tense ending; choose it for the event viewpoint, not simply because a sentence concerns yesterday.
The not / haven't没 + (completed / change)了 trap
- To deny that the going event happened, practise I / me我not / haven't没to go去 without verb-suffix (completed / change)了. This is the negative event pattern, not a ban on every sentence containing not / haven't没 and (completed / change)了.
- (completed / change)了 is not a past-tense ending. Sentence-final (completed / change)了 has other functions and can occur in sentences containing not / haven't没; choose the pattern for the intended meaning rather than deleting every (completed / change)了 mechanically.
- Practice box 2: record the negative sentence with its reason.
Work through a decision: Before telling a story, sort the notes into events, non-events and reasons. A planned park visit and an actual library visit are different. Keep the intended sequence, then choose how to express aspect; adding (completed / change)了 to every verb cannot repair a story that changes the facts.
Compare a near miss: A plausible reason is not a reported reason. If notes mention rain and staying indoors, do not invent a cancelled train or a friend’s illness to make the story sound fuller. Compare accuracy as well as sentence flow.
Deny that the going event happened. Record the sentence.
我没去 denies the going event. Sentence-final 了 has other functions and can occur in sentences with 没; the lesson’s event-negation pattern is not a universal prohibition.
Notes: yesterday you did homework, did not watch television and slept at ten. Which short account keeps those facts?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
The second account preserves homework, no television and ten o’clock. The others reverse a negative or alter the time. More fluent wording would not excuse those factual changes.
Comparing with than / compared to比
- A than / compared to比 B + adjective: today今天than / compared to比yesterday昨天to warm up热。
- Soften or sharpen it: good好erhua variant of 一点一点儿 (a little better), many好多(completed / change)了 (much better), than / compared to比……more更…… for emphasis.
- today今天degree / adjective linker很to warm up热,yesterday昨天不热 states two temperature descriptions; today今天than / compared to比yesterday昨天to warm up热 directly compares their degree of heat. The first is not an ungrammatical sentence, but it makes a different claim.
- Practice box 3: record the comparison.
Compare today and yesterday. Record the sentence.
A 比 B + adjective — the frame does the comparing; no extra word needed.
Reasons that link
- The frame: because因为 …, so / therefore所以 … — because因为to rain下雨,so / therefore所以I / me我not / haven't没to go去park (for public recreation)公园。
- because因为to rain下雨,I / me我not / haven't没to go去park (for public recreation)公园 is also grammatical. Practise both markers for the exercise below, while recognising that because因为 and so / therefore所以 are not both required in every causal sentence.
- Practice box 4: record the full because因为…so / therefore所以 sentence.
The full 因为…所以 frame. Record it.
Practise both 因为 and 所以 for this exercise. A causal sentence can also use one of them; the complete pair is a practice frame, not a requirement of every natural utterance.
Asking for help politely
- trouble麻烦you你 + request: trouble麻烦you你to help帮I / me我(used after a verb) give it…一下。 — sorry to trouble you, give me a hand.
- The cheerful answer: not / haven't没question问题! — no problem!
- Practice box 5: record the request and the answer.
Ask for help and answer. Record both sides.
麻烦你 + request is the polite opener; 没问题 is the cheerful yes.
Your turn: your yesterday
- Tell your yesterday in three sentences: two events with (completed / change)了, one comment. Add one comparison with than / compared to比.
- Practice box 6 gives a model evening — tell yours when you record.
- Record twice: once reading your plan, once free. Compare the endings of every verb phrase.
YOUR yesterday evening — swap in your own events. Record twice.
This is a local narrative task. Preserve the intended event sequence and choose aspect for that meaning; finishing a turn is not proof of HSK proficiency.
Fresh fictional story notes: 昨天下雨。我没去公园。我在家做了作业。晚上十点睡觉。Retell the events in your own connected Mandarin turn and make the connection between the weather and the changed outing clear. Treat the supplied weather as the stated reason for this fictional card; do not add another event. Speak in Mandarin. Use brief notes rather than reading a prepared answer.
Written comparison supports your own replay and revision. No automatic correctness, pronunciation score or exam-level judgement is provided.
Keep the voice working
- Tomorrow, before you reopen this page: tell yesterday in three sentences — aloud, with (completed / change)了 in the right places and none in the wrong ones.
- Separate Chinese practice has its own task instructions. Saying a written answer aloud is additional rehearsal, not a reviewed listening or speaking assessment.
- Next speaking lesson: opinions, plans and suggestions.
Later recall: Tomorrow, retell different notes with one event denied and one event completed. A few days later, switch to a two-day comparison and change one fact. Check your retelling against the notes before judging how smooth it sounds.
New comparison card: 昨天很冷,我在家看书。今天比昨天暖和,我去公园。Explain the contrast in Mandarin, including yesterday’s activity and today’s different activity. Then change today’s activity to 去商店 and record a revised ending without changing the weather comparison. Speak in Mandarin. Use brief notes rather than reading a prepared answer.
Written comparison supports your own replay and revision. No automatic correctness, pronunciation score or exam-level judgement is provided.
