The future — will and be going to

Talking about the future

- Outcome: make clear offers, intentions and predictions, and recognise arranged or scheduled future events. English has several ways to talk about the future.
- Here we focus on will and be going to; present forms can also refer to the future.
- Their uses overlap. Start with present continuous and am/is/are. Quick check: can The train leaves tomorrow refer to the future? Yes; a present form can give a timetable. Allow about 45–60 minutes across sessions, including later review; this is a study suggestion.
I am going to study tonight; my phone has other plans.
will — decide now, predict, promise
- will + base verb (same for everyone; won't = will not).
- On-the-spot decision: The phone's ringing — I'll get it.
- Prediction or promise: It will rain tomorrow. I won't be late. A prediction expresses a belief about the future; it is not proof of what will happen.
- Negative: I won’t call. Question: Will you call? Short replies: Yes, I will / No, I won’t. Keep the base verb after will; do not add do/does to this question frame.
Choose the complete will statement using base-form help.

Will help keeps a base verb after will. Helps and helping do not fit this simple frame. Next try: make its negative with won’t.
be going to — plans & evidence
- am / is / are + going to + base verb.
- A plan you already have: We're going to visit grandma.
- A prediction from what you can see: Look at the clouds — it's going to rain. Present evidence can support a prediction without guaranteeing the outcome.
- Negative: She isn’t going to call. Question: Is she going to call? Short replies: Yes, she is / No, she isn’t. Put not after be for negatives; move be before the subject for these questions.
The phone is ringing and you offer to answer. Complete with the contracted form of will: “___ get it.”
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
I’ll is the contracted will form requested. I’m going to get it can also be grammatical in context; it simply does not use the requested form.
Complete the plan: We are ___ to visit grandma. (going / go)

In this specified be going to frame, use going: We are going to visit grandma. Other future forms can also express plans in suitable contexts.
Translate into English: 明天会下雨。

A prediction → will or going to: “It will rain tomorrow.”
Choose the complete be-going-to statement about two people.

We takes are, and going to is followed by base cook. Is gives the wrong agreement; cooked is not the base form. Next try: describe one person.
will or going to?
- A new offer often uses will: I’ll help you.
- An intention can use going to: I’m going to study tonight. These are useful tendencies, not two exclusive meanings.
- Both can predict; going to leans on present evidence.
Which future pattern is written?
Identify the will or be going to form actually written in each example. Their typical uses can overlap; this is not a test of one compulsory form for every situation.
Is this correct? “I will to call you tonight.”

After will, use the base verb (no “to”): “I will call you tonight.”
Choose the complete negative in the will frame.

Won’t call uses will not with base call. The alternatives mix do with will or keep an ending after the auxiliary. Next try: ask a will-question.
Common mistakes
- I’m going to Shanghai tomorrow can describe an arrangement. I go to Shanghai tomorrow can also fit a scheduled itinerary. The train leaves at nine tomorrow uses present simple for a timetable; English does not require will in every future sentence.
- ❌ We will going to visit grandma. → ✓ We are going to visit grandma / We will visit grandma. Will going is incomplete; these two repairs use the simple frames practised here, not a ban on other complete future constructions.
- ❌ She will comes. → ✓ She will come. — after will, the base form.
Practise an offer using will: “I ___ carry your bag.” Which option completes that requested form?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Will completes the form requested here. Am going to can also form a grammatical intention; a spontaneous offer does not make every alternative ungrammatical.
“The train leaves at 9 tomorrow.” — can the present simple talk about a timetable?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Yes. Present simple can describe a scheduled future event. Future reference does not always require will or going to.
On Tuesday, Dana says: “I’m meeting Lee on Friday. Our train leaves at 10 that morning.” Which interpretation fits the two sentences?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Friday sets the future meeting, and that morning refers back to Friday for the timetable. Present continuous can describe an arrangement; present simple can describe a scheduled departure. Neither sentence needs will to have future meaning. If you read either event as Tuesday, check the time phrase and its reference, then try a new calendar message.
A timetable says, “The train leaves tomorrow at eight.” Which interpretation fits?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Present simple can give this future timetable. It does not force yesterday or require will. Next try: ask whether the timetable is still current.
- will + base verb can give an offer, decision, prediction or promise. be going to + base verb can express an intention or evidence-based prediction; put not and the question words in the complete chosen frame.
- Context helps, but does not make these uses exclusive. A future plan or timetable is not a report that the event has already happened, and it is not a guarantee against later changes.
Write one sentence about a plan you have for this weekend. Use “be going to”.
난이도 3/5 · 200 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Example: “I am going to visit my cousin on Saturday.”
Fresh message: a colleague says the room is too hot. Offer one action you can take now. Then tell them about a confirmed appointment you have tomorrow; you may invent its details. Write two short English sentences. After comparing, revise one sentence if its verb form or time reference is unclear. Several natural formulations can work; this local self-review gives no proficiency score.
Compare meaning, verb frame and time reference. These are possible messages, not a single compulsory future formula.
A speaker had already planned a visit and says, “We’ll visit on Sunday.” Which judgment fits?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Will can occur with a planned future visit; the forms do not split every context into exclusive categories. The statement is not a report of completion. Next try: express the intention with going to as another possible frame.
Three worked contrasts
- Form and meaning: She will call tomorrow and She is going to call tomorrow are complete future-reference frames. Near miss: She will calls repeats a third-person ending after will; repair it to will call. Choosing between complete frames needs context, not a rule that every plan makes will wrong.
- Offer and intention: Seeing a friend struggle with a box, I’ll carry it can offer help now. I’m going to practise the piano tonight can state an earlier intention. Near miss: An offer must use will, so I’m going to carry it is impossible confuses a useful tendency with an exclusive grammar rule. A different natural offer can fit; when a task asks for will, practise that requested frame.
- Arrangement and timetable: I’m meeting Jo on Friday can give an agreed arrangement. The bus leaves at nine on Friday gives a scheduled departure. Near miss: Both need will because Friday is future ignores these present forms. Keep the date and complete frame; neither statement proves the event has already happened or rules out a later change.
Independent decisions
- Try the new contexts without reopening the examples. Check the full verb frame and time reference, then ask whether the message gives an offer, intention, forecast or schedule. A requested practice form does not make every alternative ungrammatical.
- After feedback, name one form, time or unsupported-inference error and repair it. Make another example with different facts. These are written decisions, not a test of spoken fluency or independent proficiency.
Choose the complete will statement about two friends.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Will call uses a base verb without a past or third-person ending. The other options do not complete this simple frame. Next try: describe one friend with the same base verb.
Choose the complete will negative.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Won’t travel gives will not plus base travel. The alternatives mix auxiliaries or add an ending after won’t. Next try: ask whether they will travel.
Choose the complete will-question.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Will they call tonight? puts will before the subject and keeps base call. The other choices mix frames or add an ending. Next try: give a matching short reply.
A friend asks, “Will Rae help?” You know she is willing to help. Choose the matching short reply.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Yes, she will matches the will-question. Is answers another frame; helps will does not form this short reply. Next try: give a full offer or promise with will help.
Choose the complete will sentence about being ready tomorrow.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Will takes base be in this frame, not is or are. Singular Mia does not add an agreement ending after will. Next try: make a will-question with be ready.
Choose the complete be-going-to statement with I.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
I’m means I am and completes the be frame. Is does not agree with I; bare I going leaves out be. Next try: use we are going to read.
Choose the complete statement about two named people’s intention.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
The plural pair takes are, and the intention frame keeps to before base paint. Is and the missing to do not fit here. Next try: describe only Jo.
Choose the complete be-going-to negative.

Isn’t going to drive puts not after be. The alternatives mix do with is or leave out be. Next try: ask whether Lea is going to drive.
Choose the complete question using be going to.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Are they going to visit? moves are before they and keeps base visit. The other options mix auxiliaries or use a past form after to. Next try: give a matching short negative reply.
Someone asks, “Is your brother going to come?” You know he does not intend to come. Choose the short reply using the question’s be auxiliary.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
No, he isn’t matches the is-going-to question. He won’t can give a different will statement, but it is not the matching auxiliary short reply requested; doesn’t is mixes frames. Next try: write the full negative with isn’t going to come.
A note says only, “I think it will rain tomorrow.” Which conclusion stays within it?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
I think ... will rain reports a prediction. It neither proves the weather nor reports completed rain. Next try: check a forecast separately if the decision needs current evidence.
A learner says, “I’m going to clean my room on Saturday.” Which interpretation fits?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Going to states the future intention in this context. It does not establish completion or make the plan impossible to change. Next try: ask about the planned time without inventing it.
A trip was planned yesterday. The speaker says, “I’ll visit my aunt tomorrow.” Which judgment is defensible?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
A prior plan does not make will ungrammatical. Tomorrow locates this future visit; planned yesterday is not the visit time. Next try: express the same intention with going to.
The phone is ringing. A speaker says, “I’m going to get it.” Which judgment is defensible?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
The complete going-to sentence can fit the intention. A common will-offer pattern is not a ban on all alternatives, and the sentence is not a past report. Next try: make an offer using I’ll get it.
On Monday, a message says, “The club opens at eleven tomorrow. I’m going to get there at 10:45.” Which plan is described?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
On Monday, tomorrow refers to Tuesday. The intended 10:45 arrival is before the listed eleven o’clock opening. The other readings change the day or reverse the order. This plan does not establish early entry. Next try: ask whether entry before eleven is possible.
A Friday meeting with Jo is agreed. Choose a complete present-continuous announcement of the arrangement.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
I’m meeting Jo on Friday uses am plus -ing with a future time for the arrangement. Met and will meeting do not form that requested frame. Next try: ask what time the meeting is arranged for.
A timetable lists tomorrow’s bus departure at nine. Which conclusion is supported?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
A timetable supplies the scheduled time, not proof of actual future operation or absence of changes. The departure is not already completed. Next try: check the current service notice before travelling.
A speaker says, “I’m going to the station tomorrow.” Which judgment fits this future-travel reading?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Here to the station gives a destination for going; it is not the going-to-plus-another-base-verb pattern. The sentence can refer to future travel without will. Next try: contrast I’m going to read tomorrow.
Choose the complete be-going-to statement with a base verb after to.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Going to takes base study in this intention frame. Studies and studied do not fit that position. Next try: turn the statement into a question.
Transfer: check a visit plan
- Keep the stated timetable and intention, then ask for information that is still unknown. Do not turn the plan into a completed visit or invent a changed opening time.
- Earlier, the hot-room task asked for an offer and an arranged appointment. Compare its possible message, then use the new visit context to check meaning rather than memorize one future formula.
A club timetable lists Sunday opening at ten. You intend to visit then, but do not know whether the time has changed. Which message preserves the plan and asks for the missing information?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
The message retaining the listed time and intention asks whether the opening is still current. The other options invent a current state, completed visit or changed time. Next try: answer the question only after checking the current opening information.
Return later
- Tomorrow, recall will and going-to statement, negative and question frames before rereading. Try the later-review choices and turn the new notes into an English message. Compare and revise one real mismatch, or explain why none is present.
- Continue with comparatives or spoken plans and requests. Self-review does not automatically establish correctness or certify speaking/listening ability.
Usage checked 20 October 2026: British Council, talking about the future and future forms. Examples and tasks are original; independent language/key and learner review pending.
Review later: choose the complete question using will and base bring.
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
Will Nora bring the tickets? uses will before the subject and base bring. The other options add an ending or mix question frames. Next try: give a matching short yes reply.
Review later: “We’re going to paint the room on Saturday” is the only information. Which conclusion fits?
난이도 1/5 · 100 코인 + 오늘 첫 완료 시 소액 보너스
The sentence states the intention. It does not say painting is complete or rule out later changes. Next try: ask whether supplies are ready instead of inventing that fact.
Return later without rereading. Notes: your friend’s bag—heavy, and you want to offer to carry it now; your plan—cook dinner at home tomorrow evening; timetable—bus departure at nine tomorrow morning. Write three English sentences: a will offer, a be-going-to intention, and a present-simple timetable. Keep the times and do not claim any action is already completed. Compare and revise.
Compare your English with the notes and checklist. Repair a real form or meaning mismatch, or explain why none is present. Several answers can fit; self-review does not automatically mark correctness or establish proficiency.
