GAC Social Science is two modules about how societies work and how you find out. GAC027 looks at identity, at the person within a community and a nation, at how people interact and at the assumptions a society carries without noticing. GAC028 turns to global issues and to the research methods used to study them.

Research method is the real subject. Telling a primary source from a secondary one, choosing between a quantitative and a qualitative approach and judging a source for validity and bias are outcomes in their own right, and they transfer to any essay you write later.

A source is evidence for a claim, not decoration. Both modules ask you to build an argument that a reader can check, and marks follow the quality of that link rather than the strength of the opinion.

Group work is assessed. Presenting to a class, leading a discussion and solving problems as a team appear in the outcomes, so preparation includes rehearsing with other people.

Our practice tasks are original, and they keep to neutral, well documented global issues such as urbanisation, public health, education and the environment.

Two club members miss an online discussion. One observer calls them uninterested. Another asks whether they could use the platform. These explanations lead to different questions and actions. Social science asks you to connect your explanation to evidence rather than a label.

This guide supports GAC027: identity and interaction in society. Its five units connect identity, research, interaction, source analysis and interpretive frameworks. A societal research project 社会研究项目 starts with a question you can investigate safely using evidence you are permitted to obtain.

Check your teacher's current assessment brief for tasks, criteria and deadlines. The original exercise sheets on this site are practice, not official assessment papers. Clear definitions, appropriate methods and honest limits help a reader assess your reasoning; this guide does not promise marks for particular phrases or methods.

    Syllabus

Unit 1 of 5 in GAC027 Social Science II: Identity and Interaction in Society (Level II). The module is taught over about 40 class hours plus 20 hours of independent study, and is assessed at the teaching centre and moderated by ACT — there is no external exam.

Module purpose: On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of and discuss the inter- relationship between personal identity, community identity and national identity in the global context.

The module outcomes this unit works towards:

Learning Objective GAC027.1: Demonstrate an understanding of personal identity within a community and a nation, and their nation within the world.

    English

Identity 身份认同 concerns how people understand who they are and how others recognise them. Personal identity 个人身份 concerns a person's distinctive experiences and sense of self. Social identity 社会身份 concerns membership of groups. These aspects can overlap and change with context.

Socialisation 社会化 is learning the expectations and practices of social life. Family, peers, school and media can contribute. Their influence is not identical for every person, and learning a practice does not mean always following it. Roles 角色 carry expectations: a student may also be a club organiser, friend or family member.

Worked example: ask about the person, not just the category

A student speaks little during one meeting but prepares a clear written plan. The meeting record supports a claim about what the student did in that situation. It does not establish a permanent personality, ability or attitude shared by everyone with the same background. Ask about the task, available time, language and opportunities to contribute before explaining the behaviour.

A research question 研究问题 identifies what you want to find out and the scope of the study. “How do these volunteering students describe the journey to school?” is narrower than “Why do all students choose their transport?” Match your claim to the people and period you can actually study.

Primary research 一手研究 collects evidence for your investigation. Secondary research 二手研究 uses existing evidence. A published survey can inform a new question, but its population and definitions may differ from your school. Record where each piece of evidence came from.

Quantitative 定量 methods record counts or amounts. Qualitative 定性 methods examine accounts and meanings. A survey can include numeric questions and open descriptions. An interview can include a count as well as explanations. Choose by the question and data, not simply by whether the method is called a survey or interview.

Worked example: reports are not demonstrated causes

Eight interview volunteers say why they sometimes miss breakfast. Their answers describe their experiences and explanations. They do not establish every student's reason or prove that a reported constraint caused an observed pattern. A survey of reported reasons can also study perceived explanations, but its reach depends on recruitment, wording and response. Neither a large number nor a method label removes those limits.

Participation should be voluntary and appropriate to the task. Obtain the necessary permission, explain the study, avoid unnecessary identifying data and respect refusal. Do not turn an optional study into public pressure on classmates.

Norms 社会规范 are shared expectations about behaviour. Some are informal, while formal rules may also shape a situation. Status 地位 is a recognised position. An ascribed 先赋 position is assigned rather than obtained through a particular achievement; an achieved 自致 position is gained through actions or accomplishments. These are analytic categories, not judgements of a person's worth.

Group behaviour 群体行为 depends on the people, task, relationships and conditions. A group may encourage or discourage a risk; do not assume that groups always make people more daring. Institutions 制度 are relatively lasting arrangements and practices that organise social life, such as education and family arrangements. Their forms can differ.

Worked example: make a contribution observable

In a planning meeting, Lin summarises a deadline, Mei checks a cost and Rui invites a quiet member to respond. These are observed contributions. A useful analysis explains how each helps the task and what remains unresolved. It does not infer that an absent contribution proves a person is unwilling or unable.

Check a source's relevant expertise, publication date, method, definitions and possible interests. Being recent does not make it accurate. Being funded by an interested organisation creates a reason to examine the work; it does not by itself prove every result is false.

Operationalisation 操作化 turns an idea into a defined observation. “Participation” might mean making one forum post within seven days. This measures that action, not every form of contribution or a person's interest. If a later study counts paper responses too, the new measure is broader.

Compare the same definition, denominator, recruitment and period before treating two figures as a trend. A change in definition can change a number even when the underlying situation has not changed. Explain what was counted, what was excluded and what the result can describe.

The module outcomes this unit works towards:

Learning Objective GAC027.2: Describe the impact of existing paradigms on interactions and behaviors in societies.

Source: Cambridge International syllabus · ⁨출처: Cambridge International syllabus⁩

    English

A paradigm 范式 is a broad interpretive framework that shapes questions and explanations. Assumptions 假设 are starting ideas that require examination. A framework can direct attention to useful evidence while making other explanations less visible. Researchers can use frameworks explicitly; they are not always unaware of them.

Ethnocentrism 民族中心主义 means treating one's own group's standards as the basis for judging other groups. Avoid claiming that a background determines every member's behaviour. Examine the particular setting and ask participants rather than substituting a group stereotype for evidence.

    Worked example: motivation or access?

In the fictional companion case, 12 of 24 invited club members post during one seven-day forum. Seven nonposters report device problems, three report limited time, and two give no reason. A motivation-focused framework asks about interest; an access-focused framework asks about opportunity.

The recorded posting rate is 50%. Interest, actual device failures and offline contributions were not measured. Access reports deserve checking, but they do not prove one complete explanation. A permitted paper response route can help investigate participation. Keep the new definition and week separate from the first record, and do not promise that a platform change will make everyone contribute.

    Identity has several connected settings

A student belongs to a family, a school club and a nation, and works with an international project group. Does one label explain every choice the student makes? This supplement develops the public GAC027 outcomes on identity in community, nation and world, analytical research and academic communication. Read it alongside the existing handout, and follow the current centre brief for required tasks and assessment depth.

    Personal, community and national identity

Personal identity 个人身份 includes distinctive experiences, commitments and a sense of self. Community identity 社区身份 involves belonging and recognition within a community. A community might be connected by place, an activity or shared practices; its members need not agree on everything. National identity 国家认同 concerns identification with a nation and its shared histories, symbols or practices. It is not identical to a citizenship document, nor does it make every member think or behave alike.

These identities can overlap. A student may learn a family language, represent a school club and identify with a nation while collaborating with people abroad. The meaning and importance of each connection can change with situation and experience. A role describes expectations in a setting; it does not exhaust a person's identity. Ask what the person reports and does rather than deriving an attitude from a category.

A global context 全球背景 concerns relationships across places, such as movement of people, communication, trade or shared problems. A nation's relationship with the world can affect opportunities and experiences without producing one identical national response. Compare the particular interaction, its participants and its evidence. Avoid presenting an individual's account as the opinion of an entire nation.

Worked example: belonging and different expectations

In a fictional international school project, a student wants to include a local example important to their community. The group has limited presentation time and a shared question. A useful discussion asks how the example answers that question, how to explain it to the audience and what the student wants listeners to understand. It does not assume that everyone from the same nation wants the same example. The group can agree an explicit selection rule and acknowledge differing priorities.

Turn a research question into an achievable project

A societal research project 社会研究项目 connects a question with permitted evidence about social life. Choose a question narrow enough for the available time and access. “How do volunteering club members describe barriers to posting in this week's forum?” is a study of accounts from those volunteers. It cannot promise an explanation of every student's participation.

Compare primary research 一手研究 and secondary research 二手研究 before selecting them. Your own voluntary interviews can explore participants' experiences, but recruitment, wording and small numbers limit reach. Existing records or published studies may cover a wider period, but their definitions, population and purpose may differ. A method is useful when it fits your question, not just because it is new or has a large sample.

Write a short proposal with the question, the people and period, evidence needed, selection, permissions, recording method and intended analysis. Use clear neutral wording. Pilot a question with permission to check understanding, recording the change rather than silently mixing different versions. Do not collect unnecessary identifying or sensitive details. Explain participation and any withdrawal limits under the approved procedure, and respect refusal.

Initiative 主动性 means justifying a useful decision within the permitted task: locating an original source, identifying a missing denominator or proposing a feasible method. Keep a decision log of the problem, options, choice and reasons. Required permissions still apply; do not change recruitment or contact people without them.

    Analyse records and alternative explanations

Use operationalisation 操作化 to define what a record counts. In the original fictional forum case, participation means at least one post within seven days. Twelve of twenty-four invited members posted, so the recorded posting rate is fifty percent. This is not every form of contribution. A useful project explains what the measure includes and excludes.

Seven nonposters reported device problems, three reported limited time and two gave no reason. These are reported explanations, not independently established causes. The absence of a reason is missing information, not evidence of disinterest. Keep a motivation-focused account and an access-focused account open to checking. A planned paper-response route could investigate additional forms of participation, but it changes the definition and period. Do not combine its later count with the first week as if the measures were identical.

A source comparison 来源比较 checks expertise, method, definitions, selection, period and interests. A forum-only rate differs from one including paper responses. Find compatible definitions before claiming a trend; otherwise report the limit. Interested funding deserves examination, not automatic rejection.

Communicate an argument in academic form

An academic argument 学术论证 states a claim, gives relevant evidence, explains its connection and acknowledges limits. Distinguish observation, participant report, interpretation and proposal. “Seven nonposters reported device problems” is more accurate than “Devices caused all nonparticipation.” Support an opinion without presenting it as a measured fact.

    Worked example: revise an overclaim

Overclaim: “Half the members do not care, so the new platform will make everyone participate.”

Supported paragraph: “Twelve of twenty-four invited members posted during one week. Several nonposters reported access or time difficulties; interest and offline contributions were not measured. A permitted paper-response option could explore additional participation, with a separate definition and period. These data do not establish that a platform change will make everyone contribute.”

Follow the required format and make question, method, findings and conclusions traceable. Cite borrowed claims with source details. In a presentation, explain the denominator and limits, and invite questions. Confident delivery cannot repair unsupported reasoning.

    Practice and explained answers

    1. Why does national membership not determine every individual's opinion?
    2. Give one permitted example of initiative in a research project.
    3. What does the forum's fifty-percent rate measure?
    4. What does a nonposter giving no reason establish?
    5. Why must later paper responses have a separate definition and period?
    6. Rewrite “Device problems caused all absence” to fit the recorded case.

Answers. 1. Experiences and overlapping identities differ between individuals. 2. Locate a relevant original source or identify a missing denominator. 3. At least one forum post in the recorded seven days. 4. No reason was recorded; disinterest was not established. 5. Both measure and observation period changed. 6. Seven nonposters reported device problems; other causes remain untested.

GAC028 Social Science III: Research Skills and Global Issues · ⁨GAC028 사회 과학 III: 연구 기술 및 글로벌 이슈⁩

    2.1

What this module is, and how it is marked

A school counts food waste and asks students why they leave food. The counts describe an amount. The answers describe reported reasons. A useful report connects both to a clear question and says what remains unknown.

This guide supports GAC028: global issues, research methods and academic reporting. Start with your teacher's actual project and assessment brief for permitted topics, methods, structure and criteria. The site-created exercises are original practice, not official assessments. They use invented cases clearly separated from the cited historical context.

Use an achievable, ethically appropriate question. A classroom project can investigate a local part of a wider issue; it does not need to claim it has solved the issue for everyone. Do not collect sensitive or identifying information without a justified need and the required permissions.

    2.1

    Introduction to global issues

    Syllabus

Unit 1 of 3 in GAC028 Social Science III: Research Skills and Global Issues (Level III). The module is taught over about 40 class hours plus 20 hours of independent study, and is assessed at the teaching centre and moderated by ACT — there is no external exam.

Module purpose: On completion of this module, students should be able to discuss global issues and use appropriate social and cultural research methodologies to investigate, analyze, and present opinions on global issues.

The module outcomes this unit works towards:

Learning Objective GAC028.1: Explain the nature of global issues and outline the major global issues of the past century.

Learning Objective GAC028.2: Analyse and discuss selected global issues using arguments supported by authoritative sources.

Source: Cambridge International syllabus · ⁨출처: Cambridge International syllabus⁩

A global issue 全球性议题 matters across societies or connects places through its causes, effects or responses. Water access, food systems and education access can involve international concerns while differing between local settings. A global issue need not have one cause or a solution that works identically everywhere.

A shared resource 共有资源 is used by several groups. An externality 外部性 is an effect on others whose full cost or benefit is not reflected in an action. A collective action problem 集体行动问题 arises when a shared benefit is difficult to secure through individual action alone. These concepts fit some cases; do not force all three onto every issue.

Development 发展 can be studied through health, education, living conditions and income. An indicator represents a defined aspect, not the whole life of a community. Compare definitions and context before ranking situations from one number.

    Historical context: water cooperation

The first United Nations Water Conference took place in Mar del Plata in 1977. In 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals included a dedicated water and sanitation goal, SDG 6. These milestones show sustained international attention. They do not establish that water access was achieved everywhere or describe a particular river's current water quality. Sources checked 2 October 2026: UN water and sanitation and UN water-conference history.

Upstream and downstream users depend on one river, while actual effects need measurement.

Worked example: possible costs and actual findings

Fictional settlement A uses a river for irrigation. Settlement B is downstream and draws household water. A proposed discharge could impose a water-quality cost on B. This identifies a possible externality; it does not prove contamination. No tests are supplied, and no permit is approved.

Shared monitoring could inform both users. Agree on what to measure, where and when to sample, how to report the results and who pays. A discussion proposal is not a permission to discharge. Keep each group's needs visible and judge a response against evidence.

Match a method to a bounded question. Counting plate waste can estimate amounts in observed lunches. Interviews can explore participants' reported reasons. Mixed methods 混合方法 combine different kinds of evidence when that helps the question. Using two methods is not automatically better and does not turn association or self-report into causal proof.

Sampling 抽样 selects observations or participants. Describe the people, places, time, selection and missing responses. Volunteers may differ from nonvolunteers. A small convenience sample can support a useful local pilot, but its findings do not automatically represent the school or population.

Validity concerns whether a measure fits the intended question. Reliability concerns consistency. A checked scale used in the same way helps consistency. It cannot make a three-lunch observation represent an unobserved whole week. Neutral wording also matters: a question that calls a canteen “careless” pushes participants towards a judgement.

Research ethics 研究伦理 include understandable information, voluntary participation, appropriate consent, respectful treatment and careful handling of data. Not recording names reduces identification risks, but small groups or distinctive details can still reveal a person. Decide what can be withdrawn before collecting data, explain any limit and follow the approved procedure.

Measured amounts and volunteered descriptions answer different questions and need bounded conclusions.

Worked example: use the right denominator

Three fictional lunch groups each serve ten meals. Their returned plate waste is 2.0, 3.0 and 1.0 kilograms: 6.0 kilograms across 30 meals, or 0.20 kilograms per served meal. This is not waste per student who left food, because that student count is not given.

Eight interview volunteers respond; seven mention portion size and three mention lunch time. Reasons can overlap. The total mentions exceed the respondent count without an error. These are reported reasons among volunteers, not verified causes or every student's needs. Different menus also limit comparison across days. Extend the study only with permission and an appropriate consistent method.

Follow the actual report brief. A common structure is question or introduction, method, findings, discussion, conclusion and references. An abstract 摘要 may briefly identify the question, method, result and a key limit where required. Report instructions vary; do not treat one structure as an unchanging official rule.

The method should explain what was observed, how categories were applied, the period and selection, and the approved ethical safeguards. Findings state recorded observations. Discussion evaluates their meaning, alternative explanations and reach. A conclusion answers the bounded question and labels further work as a proposal.

The question and method lead to findings, while discussion retains limits and permission requirements.

Worked example: compare rates before deciding

A five-day fictional bin study records 8 errors in 80 items near a classroom, 18 in 90 at a stair landing, and 15 in 150 at a canteen. Rates are 10%, 20% and 10%. The stair landing has the highest recorded rate. Raw counts alone hide the different denominators.

No labels were changed and no intervention was tested. Therefore the observations do not show that new labels reduced errors. A proposed label-understanding study needs approval and a suitable design. A reference supporting label testing is not evidence of an unmeasured reduction in this school.

Give enough source detail for a reader to trace each borrowed idea, using the required reference style. Keep references separate from your invented practice data. In a group presentation, assign speaker roles, rehearse handovers, explain the table and invite questions. Do not omit limitations merely to sound certain. A listener should be able to distinguish what you recorded, what you infer and what you propose next.

    Additional notes PDF

A local study sits inside a wider global issue

A school can measure one week's food waste without explaining every country's food system. A historical conference can show international attention without proving that a problem was solved. These additional notes broaden the existing GAC028 handout's historical context and develop source evaluation, group problem solving and academic discussion. Follow your current centre guide for the required issue selection, depth and assessment task.

Major issues across the past century

A global issue 全球性议题 connects societies through causes, effects or responses. The following dated examples provide an outline across economic security, peace, public health, environment and development. They are selected contexts, not a claim that all places had the same experience or that a milestone solved the issue.

Issue family Selected historical context Question for analysis
Economic security Depression began in 1929 and spread internationally How did household experiences differ?
Peace and cooperation UN founded in 1945 after the Second World War How can societies coordinate responses?
Public health WHO intensified the programme in 1967; eradication in 1980 What helped coordinated prevention?
Environment Stockholm 1972 helped establish UNEP How do environmental effects cross boundaries?
Development The 2015 SDGs link poverty, health, education and environment Which indicators fit the question?

Economic security 经济安全 concerns access to resources and livelihoods. Federal Reserve History describes the Depression's spread and unemployment, but its main account focuses on the United States. Use it for those historical claims; a claim about a particular other society needs suitable evidence about that society. Do not make the stock-market crash a complete explanation of every consequence. Federal Reserve History: Great Depression.

Conflict can disrupt lives, movement and livelihoods across places. The UN's history records its creation in 1945 with the aim of preventing another world war. An institution's purpose is different from evidence that every later conflict was prevented. Analyse a specific response, its evidence and its limits. UN history.

Public health 公共卫生 addresses health at population level. WHO's smallpox history describes coordinated vaccination and surveillance, the intensified programme in 1967 and the 1980 eradication declaration. This is a particular historical achievement. It does not show that all diseases can be addressed by an identical programme or that technology alone secured the result. WHO smallpox history.

Environmental problems can connect production, consumption, shared resources and effects on other people. UNEP's history identifies the 1972 Stockholm conference and its role in establishing UNEP. A conference or agreement records a response; measurements are still needed to assess an environmental change. UNEP environmental timeline.

Development 发展 includes several aspects of people's lives. The 2015 SDGs connect poverty reduction with health, education, inequality and environmental concerns. They are goals and targets, not a report that every target was achieved. An income indicator alone does not establish a community's health or education experience. Select measures relevant to the question and compare their definitions. UN Sustainable Development Goals. Historical sources checked 2 October 2026.

Evaluate a source before building an argument

An authoritative source 权威来源 has relevant expertise or a documented basis for the claim being used. An institutional name is a useful starting point, not permission to ignore scope, methods or uncertainty. A historical account can support a dated milestone; a local measurement report can support a result for its stated place and period. A promotional statement about success needs the evidence used to judge success.

Keep an evidence log: claim, source, date, population or setting, measure, method and limitation. Trace a statistic to its original report when possible. Check whether two websites reproduce the same evidence. A bias 偏差 can arise from selection, wording, missing responses or interpretation. Identify how the problem might affect the result; do not merely label a source “biased” because you disagree with it.

Worked comparison: a target and an observation

One source sets a waste-reduction target. Another records waste per served meal during three lunches. The target shows an intended outcome; the observations describe a measured period. Comparing them needs compatible measures and relevant context. Neither source shows that a new school policy caused a reduction when no intervention was tested. State exactly which claim each source supports.

Investigate a local part with an appropriate method

Write a bounded question such as: “What returned plate-waste mass per served meal was recorded in the observed lunches, and what reasons did volunteers report?” A quantitative method 定量方法 measures amounts or counts. A qualitative method 定性方法 examines accounts and meanings. The original handout's six kilograms across thirty meals gives 0.20 kilograms per served meal. Volunteer interviews can add reported reasons, not prove their causes.

Specify observation period, selection, categories, units, permissions and analysis before collecting anything. Use the same recording rule and retain unexpected records. Pilot wording with permission. Explain consent, data handling and withdrawal limits under the approved procedure. A school's permitted pilot does not represent all schools or solve global food waste. A literature review supports background; it does not replace required observations that were never made.

Solve a group problem with explicit criteria

A stakeholder 利益相关者 is a person or group affected by a decision. Students, canteen staff and school managers may have different needs. Define the problem from evidence, generate alternatives, compare criteria and justify a feasible proposal. Keep unresolved evidence and required permissions visible.

In this fictional planning case, no intervention has been performed:

Proposal Possible benefit What needs checking
Offer an approved smaller-portion option Could better match some students' appetites Nutrition requirements, staff capacity, demand and actual waste
Ask volunteers about portion preferences Could clarify reported preferences Neutral wording, recruitment and how findings will be used
Display a waste reminder Could draw attention to the issue Comprehension, unintended pressure and whether waste changes

Given only reported portion concerns, a team could propose an approved preference study first to check demand and feasibility. Record its criteria, reasoning and disagreement. This does not demonstrate reduced waste. A later evaluation needs comparable waste-per-meal measures and attention to changed menus or recruitment.

Lead an academic discussion for the audience

Academic register 学术语体 uses precise language and distinguishes evidence from opinion. Adapt to the audience's knowledge: define technical measures, explain denominators and state limits. Clear language need not sound complicated.

Plan speaker and chair roles, rehearse handovers and agree a discussion question. The chair can ask which criteria should compare the options and invite quieter members without forcing personal disclosure. Summarise views fairly, ask what evidence would resolve disagreement, and identify an agreed next step or unresolved point.

Supported statement: “Seven volunteers mentioned portion size; this justifies exploring preferences, not predicting a policy's effect.” Avoid claiming that everyone wants smaller meals or that an untested solution will work. Cite borrowed claims and separate fictional practice data from researched findings.

    Practice and explained answers

    1. Why does a 1945 institutional purpose not prove that every later conflict was prevented?
    2. What does the smallpox example establish, and what broader claim does it not establish?
    3. How does a target differ from an observation?
    4. Why can the waste counts and interviews answer different parts of one question?
    5. Name two criteria for comparing the fictional portion proposals.
    6. What should a discussion chair do with disagreement?
    7. Rewrite “Everyone wants smaller meals, so the solution will work.”

Answers. 1. An aim is not a measurement of all later outcomes. 2. A particular coordinated programme achieved eradication; it does not establish one universal programme for all diseases. 3. A target specifies an intended result; an observation records evidence. 4. Counts measure recorded amounts; interviews explore reported reasons. 5. Staff capacity and demand, or nutrition requirements and measured waste. 6. Summarise views fairly, compare criteria and identify needed evidence or an unresolved point. 7. Seven volunteers mentioned portion size; further permitted research is needed before predicting policy effects.
