What this module is, and how it is marked · ⁨이 모듈의 구성 및 채점 기준⁩

English

GAC008 is Academic English II, reading and writing. Where GAC002 built the paragraph, this module builds the researched text: reading critically, avoiding plagiarism in practice, and citing sources properly.

Assessment is written and continuous, and the final piece is usually a short researched essay with a reference list rather than a personal one.

  • Information literacy 信息素养 is a named outcome here: selecting appropriate research material and referencing it accurately.
  • ⚠ Referencing is now marked directly, not merely expected. An essay with good ideas and no citations loses marks it cannot recover.

평가 방식은 서면 평가와 지속 평가를 병행하며, 최종 과제通常是一个短研究论文,附有参考文献列表而非个人笔记。 with a reference list rather than a personal one.

  • 정보 리터러시 信息素养는 여기서 명시된 결과物之一:선정合适的研究材料并准确引用它。 material and referencing it accurately.
  • ⚠ 引用法现在直接计分,而不仅仅是期望。一篇观点很好但没有引用的论文会失去无法挽回的分数。 citations loses marks it cannot recover.

English
  • Academic writing has recognisable features 特征: an impersonal voice, hedged claims, defined terms, evidence before conclusion.
  • Nominalisation 名词化 turns a process into a noun — we investigated becomes the investigation — which is why academic prose feels dense.
  • Identify the genre 体裁 before you write: a report, an essay, a case study and a review each have a different shape and a different reader.

  • 명사화 名词化将过程变为名词——我们调查了 变为 这项调查——这就是为什么学术散文显得密集的原因。 investigation* — which is why academic prose feels dense.

Places where people live and work: reading for argument · ⁨사람들이 살고 일하는 곳: 논증을 위한 읽기⁩

Syllabus

Unit 2 of 6 in GAC008 Academic English II: Reading and Writing Skills (Level II). The module is taught over about 40 class hours plus 20 hours of independent study, and is assessed at the teaching centre and moderated by ACT — there is no external exam.

The module outcomes this unit works towards:

Learning Objective GAC008.3: Decode unknown vocabulary and idiom.

Learning Objective GAC008.4: Write complex sentences which link ideas in a variety of ways.

Source: Cambridge International syllabus · ⁨출처: Cambridge International syllabus⁩

English
  • Distinguish a claim 论断 from the evidence that supports it. Most weak reading treats both as facts.
  • Find the author's stance 立场: what do they want you to accept, and where do they hedge?
  • Mark the counter-argument 反驳 if there is one. A text that never concedes anything is usually persuasion rather than analysis.

Worked example. "Although early trials were small, three subsequent studies found the same effect, which suggests the result is robust."

Claim: the result is robust. Evidence: three studies replicating. Concession: the early trials were small. Hedge: suggests.

Reading a sentence this way — four labels, one sentence — is the skill the unit is built on.

한국어
  • 断言 论断与其支持的 证据 区分开来。大多数薄弱的阅读将两者都视为事实。 both as facts.
  • 找出作者的 立场 立场:他们想让你接受什么,他们在哪里使用了谨慎语气?
  • 반론 반박이 있다면 표시하십시오. 절대 양보하지 않는 텍스트는 usually persuasion rather than analysis.

作业示例。 "尽管早期试验规模较小,但随后的三项研究发现相同的效果,这表明结果是稳健的。" effect, which suggests the result is robust."

断言:结果是稳健的。证据:三项重复的研究。让步:早期试验规模小。谨慎语气:suggests(表明)。 were small. Hedge: suggests.

以这种方式阅读句子——四个标签对应一个句子——正是该单元所培养的能力。

Doing business: vocabulary and idiom · ⁨开展业务:词汇与习语⁩

Syllabus

Unit 3 of 6 in GAC008 Academic English II: Reading and Writing Skills (Level II). The module is taught over about 40 class hours plus 20 hours of independent study, and is assessed at the teaching centre and moderated by ACT — there is no external exam.

The module outcomes this unit works towards:

Learning Objective GAC008.5: Write well-constructed paragraphs containing topic sentences with supporting statements, and a range of cohesive devices.

Source: Cambridge International syllabus · ⁨출처: Cambridge International syllabus⁩

English
  • Decode unknown vocabulary and idiom from context, word parts and grammar, as in GAC002 but now in denser text.
  • Collocation 词语搭配 matters as much as meaning: you conduct research, draw a conclusion, raise a question. The wrong partner word reads as non-native even when the meaning is right.
  • Record new terms with a real sentence, not a translation. The sentence carries the collocation.
한국어

  • 搭配 词语搭配的重要性与意义同等重要:你 conduct research, draw a conclusion, raise a question。即使意思正确,错误的搭配词读起来也不像母语者。 conclusion, raise a question. The wrong partner word reads as non-native even when the meaning is right.
  • 用真实的句子记录新术语,而不是翻译。句子承载了搭配关系。

Human health: sentences and cohesion · ⁨人类健康:句子与衔接⁩

Syllabus

Unit 4 of 6 in GAC008 Academic English II: Reading and Writing Skills (Level II). The module is taught over about 40 class hours plus 20 hours of independent study, and is assessed at the teaching centre and moderated by ACT — there is no external exam.

The module outcomes this unit works towards:

Learning Objective GAC008.2: Demonstrate key reading skills.

Learning Objective GAC008.6: Demonstrate writing skills which assist students to avoid plagiarism.

Source: Cambridge International syllabus · ⁨출처: Cambridge International syllabus⁩

English
  • Level II expects complex sentences used deliberately: subordination to show which idea matters, not to sound advanced.
  • Cohesive devices 衔接手段 join sentences: reference words, substitution, ellipsis, and connectives that fit the logic.
  • ⚠ A paragraph stuffed with however, moreover and furthermore is not cohesive. It is signposting relationships that are not there, and a marker notices.
한국어
  • 二级要求有意识地使用 复杂句:通过主从复合句突出哪个观点更重要,而非为了显得高级。 subordination to show which idea matters, not to sound advanced.
  • 衔接手段 衔接手段连接句子:指代词、替代、省略以及符合逻辑的连接词。 connectives that fit the logic.
  • ⚠ 一个充斥着 however, moreover 和 furthermore 的段落并不具备连贯性。它只是标示出并不存在的关系,评分员会注意到这一点。 signposting relationships that are not there, and a marker notices.

Human progress: research and synthesis · ⁨人类进步:研究与综合⁩

Syllabus

Unit 5 of 6 in GAC008 Academic English II: Reading and Writing Skills (Level II). The module is taught over about 40 class hours plus 20 hours of independent study, and is assessed at the teaching centre and moderated by ACT — there is no external exam.

The module outcomes this unit works towards:

Learning Objective GAC008.7: Use acquired knowledge and skills to research and create academic texts demonstrating synthesis of ideas.

Source: Cambridge International syllabus · ⁨출처: Cambridge International syllabus⁩

English
  • Synthesis combines several sources into one argument of your own.
  • The test of synthesis: could a reader tell which sentence came from which source? If yes, you have summarised in sequence rather than synthesised.
  • Group sources by idea, not by author. One paragraph per idea, citing whoever supports it.

Worked example. Two sources agree that street trees cool a city; one adds that the effect needs irrigation in dry months.

Not synthesis: "Li (2020) says trees cool cities. Chen (2021) says the same. Wang (2022) says they need water."

Synthesis: "Street trees measurably cool a city (Li, 2020; Chen, 2021), although the effect depends on irrigation in exactly the dry months when cooling matters most (Wang, 2022)."

One sentence, three sources, and a relationship between them that no single source stated.

한국어
  • **Synthesis(합성)**는 여러 출처를 하나의 나만의 논증으로 결합합니다.
  • 합성의 시험: 독자가 각 문장이 어느 출처에서 유래했는지 알 수 있을까요? 그렇다면 당신은 순서대로 요약한 것이지 합성한 것이 아닙니다.
  • 출처를 저자별이 아닌 주제별로 분류하십시오. 주제마다 한 단락씩, 이를 지지하는 저자를 인용하십시오.

worked example(해설 예시).

English
  • A citation points to a full entry in the reference list. Both are marked.
  • Use one referencing style 引用格式 consistently. Which one matters far less than consistency.
  • Evaluate a source before citing it: authority, currency, and whether it is primary or secondary.
  • ⚠ Citing a source you have not read, because another author cited it, is a secondary citation 转引, and it must be labelled as one.
