GAC Social Science

Tips

GAC Social Science is two modules about how societies work and how you find out. GAC027 looks at identity, at the person within a community and a nation, at how people interact and at the assumptions a society carries without noticing. GAC028 turns to global issues and to the research methods used to study them.

Research method is the real subject. Telling a primary source from a secondary one, choosing between a quantitative and a qualitative approach and judging a source for validity and bias are outcomes in their own right, and they transfer to any essay you write later.

A source is evidence for a claim, not decoration. Both modules ask you to build an argument that a reader can check, and marks follow the quality of that link rather than the strength of the opinion.

Group work is assessed. Presenting to a class, leading a discussion and solving problems as a team appear in the outcomes, so preparation includes rehearsing with other people.

Our practice tasks are original, and they keep to neutral, well documented global issues such as urbanisation, public health, education and the environment.
