Restore a rain-garden explanation one word at a time
- Outcome: restore a partial word using its visible letters, grammatical role and paragraph meaning, then explain a correction. Begin with word-completion principles. Use the original paragraph’s meaning as well as its visible letters. Complete the gaps before using the later grammar review; the review explains the answers.
This is site-created practice for the 2026 TOEFL iBT Complete the Words task, not an ETS question. The original paragraph below is about 90 words. Its first sentence is intact; in the next stretch, the latter half of every second word is missing. There are ten gaps. Type only the missing letters in each exercise, not the whole word.
Rain gardens are shallow planted areas that collect water flowing off roofs and paths during a storm. Plants abs___ (1) some wa___ (2) while ro___ (3) create nar___ (4) spaces th__ (5) help ra__ (6) move thr____ (7) the so__ (8) more slo___ (9) after sto___ (10). Researchers can compare how much water leaves two similar paths, one beside a rain garden and one without it. Such a comparison must account for the size of each paved area and the intensity of each storm. A single wet afternoon does not prove that the garden will perform equally well in every season.
The passage is a small explanation of how a rain garden can slow runoff and how researchers might compare two places. The whole topic is in the first sentence; no specialist knowledge is needed.
The missing letters did not leave a forwarding address, but they left grammar clues.
Read around a gap before you type
Try an unscored miniature example: The roots ret___ some water. The visible ret narrows the possibilities, roots is the subject, and some water is the object. Retain makes sense, so the missing letters are ain. Notice that the answer is only the missing part.
In the longer passage, scan for a subject and a verb. A prefix such as ro may suggest several words on its own. The phrase after it tells you what those things do, and the preceding clause tells you what is being contrasted or added. Read both sides of each gap.
Let the paragraph settle close choices
If a completion seems grammatically possible but makes the explanation strange, keep reading. The later sentences repeat important ideas: water leaves paths, paved area and storm intensity affect comparisons, and one afternoon is weak evidence for all seasons. These ideas help you check whether your reconstructed sentence belongs in the paragraph.
Do not change the printed prefix. Do not write an entire word where only letters are requested. After each entry, mentally join the letters and read the result as a complete sentence.
Fill the ten gaps
Use the ten checks below in passage order. They test the letters you add; for example, if a word appeared as pla___, you would type only its missing ending. The explanations appear after each check so you can compare your reasoning with the evidence in the passage.
The printed prefix is part of the answer. Typing the whole word in a missing-letters box changes the task and will not match the key.
Gap 1, abs___: type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Plants absorb some water. The prefix abs plus orb forms absorb, a verb that fits plants and water.
Gap 2, wa___: type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
The first sentence names water flowing off surfaces; some water is then absorbed. Wa plus ter restores water.
Gap 3, ro___: type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Roots are the plant parts that create spaces in the next clause. Ro plus ots restores the plural subject roots.
Gap 4, nar___: type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Narrow describes the spaces made by roots. Nar plus row produces an adjective before spaces.
Gap 5, th__: type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
The clause identifies spaces that help rain move. Th plus at forms the relative word that.
Gap 6, ra__: type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
The first sentence mentions a storm and water; the spaces help rain move. Ra plus in forms rain.
Gap 7, thr____: type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Rain moves through the soil, not merely towards it. Thr plus ough restores the preposition through.
Gap 8, so__: type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
The rain moves through the soil beneath the planted area. So plus il forms soil.
Gap 9, slo___: type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
More slowly tells how rain moves; slowly is an adverb modifying move. Slo plus wly restores it.
Gap 10, sto___: type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
The sentence says after storms. The passage also mentions a storm at the start and each storm later, confirming the topic. Sto plus rms forms storms.
Review a wrong gap as a sentence problem
For every missed gap, write down the printed prefix, your completed word, and the phrase on both sides. Ask which clue you overlooked: letters, grammar or meaning. This is more useful than memorising ten endings from one paragraph.
The passage is an original approximation of the published task, not an adaptive score estimate. A single ten-gap text cannot predict a TOEFL Reading score.
Task mechanics checked on 19 October 2026: ETS updated TOEFL iBT overview, Reading sample tasks.
Use grammar to check the rain-garden explanation
- The passage says plants absorb water while roots create narrow spaces. Plants and roots are plural subjects; the present-tense verbs do not add a singular -s.
- “More slowly” explains how water moves through the soil. An adjective such as slow cannot take that adverb’s job in this sentence. Identify the role before deciding the missing letters.
View the original rain-garden case at full size
- A correct gap does not prove you understood the experiment. The comparison also has to account for paved area and storm intensity.
- Reconstruct each word, read the entire sentence and identify why that form fits.
- Try the transfer checks below before returning to the explanation. These are original self-checks, with no official score conversion.
Match the three distinctions from the worked case.

Reconstruct each word, read the entire sentence and identify why that form fits.
Enter the ending, then rejoin the word
- In the short example “Each visitor wa___ outside,” the full word is waits, but the entry is its: the printed wa stays. A correct complete word can still be the wrong box entry. Join the printed letters to what you type before checking.
- Each underscore represents one missing letter in these texts. The local checker ignores case and outer spaces; it does not ignore missing letters or accept a repeated prefix. These are practice controls, not a claim about the official test interface or score.
Use grammar without losing the sentence
- Compare “Visitors wait outside” with “Each visitor waits outside.” The singular subject changes the present-tense verb. In “Visitors walk quietly,” the adverb describes the action. Quiet describes a quality; it does not replace quietly in that sentence.
- Letters and grammar narrow possibilities, then meaning checks the result. “Bring the borrowed book back” expresses a return. Do not choose a familiar word just because it begins with the printed letters. A prefix is a clue, not a tiny fortune-teller.
Guided text — a library procedure
- Read the intact first sentence, then restore the ten numbered words. The cues beneath each source panel point to a grammatical or meaning clue without supplying the missing ending. Type only the letters after the printed beginning.
- Reopen the complete source within any question when needed. Source access is expected reading, not an answer hint or a memory test. Feedback appears after checking; read the reconstructed word in its clause before moving on.

The arch_____ (1) examines sev____ (2) images care_____ (3) and che___ (4) the na___ (5) against wri____ (6) notes bef___ (7) adding det____ (8) to n__ (9) catalogue ent____ (10). If two notes disagree about a name, the description records that uncertainty. It does not turn a guess into a confirmed identity. The work makes the basis of each description visible; it does not claim that every person has been identified.
Gap 4: che___. Type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Join che + cks to restore checks. Checks is a singular present-tense verb coordinated with examines; the archivist checks names against notes. Repair: reread the whole clause, then enter only the letters after the printed prefix.

After the independent texts — test a close alternative
- In the weather paragraph, compare and combine share the printed com and both need four more letters. Grammar alone allows “they compare different seasons” or “they combine different seasons.” The later statement keeps the seasonal readings separate rather than merged, so compare fits this text’s meaning.
- A correction needs the decisive clue. “I knew the word” does not explain why it fits; “the groups remain separate, so the action is comparison” does. If two natural completions really fit every constraint, a teaching key should recognise that ambiguity instead of calling one wrong merely for being unexpected.
Transfer the method to short fresh contexts
- Complete three shorter items about an unfinished report, agreement across measurements and a replacement window. Use the time relationship, grammatical role and full-sentence meaning rather than copying a previous ending.
- These are focused transfer sentences, not additional complete ten-gap task sets. A correct ending still needs a reason: join it to the prefix and identify the evidence that excludes a tempting alternative.
Read the original text: An unfinished report
The project is still in progress. The team has not fini____ the report yet.
Gap 1: fini____. Type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Fini + shed forms finished. Has not requires the past participle here, and yet supports an unfinished action. Repair: do not enter finish or the whole word finished; neither is the requested missing part.
Read the original text: Agreement across measurements
Several independent measurements agree. Their consi_____ pattern supports repeating the comparison.
Gap 2: consi_____. Type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Consi + stent forms consistent, an adjective describing the pattern. The preceding agreement supplies the meaning. Repair: use the repeated pattern across measurements instead of inventing a different noun or verb form.
Read the original text: A new window
The glass could not be repaired, so local staff rep_____ the broken window with a new one.
Gap 3: rep_____. Type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Rep + laced forms replaced. A new window takes the place of the broken one; repaired would contradict the statement that the glass could not be repaired and would not fit with a new one in this sentence. Repair: use the action in the full sentence, not the familiar beginning alone.
Explain an entry error in your own words
- The private response asks why a full word is the wrong box entry even when it fits the sentence. Draft the missing letters and a grammatical explanation before opening the model; then revise one missing distinction against the checklist.
- Several clear explanations can work. The page records comparison and revision, not an automatic writing mark. Try the same checks on a fresh word after looking away from the model.
A short practice item reads: “The equipment is fragile, so the assistants handle it gent__.” A learner types the whole word “gently”. Explain why the box needs a different entry, give the missing letters, and identify the grammar clue. Then describe one check you would use on a new paragraph.
The page records your comparison and revision, not automatic correctness or proficiency. Several explanations can preserve these distinctions.
Return later with tense and contrast
- On another day, complete the two shorter review items before reopening these notes. Say which time clue or contrast settles each answer. Correct letters without a reason are a starting point for another look, not proof that the method transfers.
- Continue to complete academic passages for main ideas, inference and purpose, or everyday reading for practical conditions. Revisit word-completion principles if you keep repeating the printed beginning or overlooking sentence grammar.
Task mechanics checked on 19 October 2026: ETS updated TOEFL iBT overview. Yesterday the group arr____ before the doors opened; no one was late.
Gap 1: arr____. Type only the missing letters.

Arr + ived forms arrived. Yesterday and opened place the event in the past; before the doors opened gives its time. Repair: check tense and the phrase following the gap together.
Read the original text: Two purposes
Both examples are useful, but their purposes dif___: one explains a term and the other compares two methods.
Gap 2: dif___. Type only the missing letters.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Dif + fer forms differ. The plural purposes takes differ, and the two different jobs after the colon explain the contrast. Repair: connect the grammar before the gap with the meaning after it.
